For lending, AI models go beyond traditional credit scores, using alternative data to assess the creditworthiness of 'new-to-credit' customers and small businesses, a major push for financial inclusion. On the front lines, AI-powered chatbots are handling customer queries 24/7, while robo-advisors provide personalized investment advice. According to market forecasts, the applied AI in India's finance market is projected to grow significantly, reaching billions of dollars by 2035.
Blockchain: Building a Trust Layer
Once exclusively associated with cryptocurrency, blockchain technology is now being recognized for its core strengths: security and transparency. In essence, blockchain is a decentralized and immutable digital ledger, which makes it ideal for complex financial processes. Indian banks are exploring its use in trade finance, where tracking goods and payments across multiple parties can be streamlined, reducing paperwork and fraud. It also holds immense potential for cross-border payments, making them faster and cheaper. While remaining cautious about cryptocurrencies, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has shown interest in the underlying Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and has been piloting its own Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), or Digital Rupee, which leverages similar principles.
The Coming Quantum Leap
Quantum computing is the most forward-looking technology on this list, but its potential impact is staggering. Unlike traditional computers that use bits (0s and 1s), quantum computers use qubits, which can exist in multiple states at once. This allows them to solve highly complex problems exponentially faster than today's best supercomputers. For finance, this has a dual impact. The positive is that quantum computers could revolutionize risk modeling, optimize investment portfolios, and discover new financial strategies. The negative, and more urgent, concern is that a powerful quantum computer could break the encryption that currently protects all our financial data. Adopting these transformative technologies is not without its hurdles. A primary concern is security and data privacy, which remains the biggest barrier to scaling up AI deployment in Indian banks. There is also the significant challenge of finding and retaining talent with the specialized skills needed to build and manage these advanced systems. Furthermore, regulatory frameworks must evolve. The RBI has already taken steps, forming committees and releasing draft guidelines for AI governance to ensure these tools are used responsibly and ethically, with mandatory human oversight for critical decisions. Balancing innovation with stability and consumer protection will be the key to successfully navigating this technological shift.
