What are Vistadome Coaches?
Indian Railways' Vistadome coaches are designed for tourism, transforming a simple train ride into a spectacular sightseeing experience. These special carriages feature large, wide windows, transparent glass roofs with anti-glare screens, and seats that
can rotate 180 degrees. This allows passengers to face the direction of the best views without leaving their seats. The coaches are air-conditioned and often include other modern amenities, providing a comfortable and luxurious way to soak in the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. They are attached to specific trains on some of the country's most picturesque routes.
The Kalka-Shimla Heritage Railway, Himachal Pradesh

Introduced in late 2023, the service runs along the scenic route between Banihal and Baramulla, offering passengers a panoramic spectacle of the Kashmir Valley. The specially designed train features 360-degree rotating seats and expansive glass windows, perfect for witnessing the region's dramatic landscapes. As the train glides through the valley, you're treated to views of snow-dusted mountains, serene rivers, and fields of saffron. More recently, the service was extended to Katra, allowing travellers to witness engineering marvels like the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, making it a truly unforgettable journey.
The Kangra Valley Railway, Himachal Pradesh
While it doesn't yet have the famous Vistadome coaches, the Kangra Valley Railway is an unmissable scenic route in North India, often overshadowed by its Shimla counterpart. This narrow-gauge 'toy train' covers a 164-kilometre stretch from Pathankot to Joginder Nagar. What makes this journey unique is its uninterrupted, panoramic view of the mighty Dhauladhar mountain range, whose snowy peaks remain a constant, magnificent backdrop for much of the trip. The train moves at a leisurely pace, crossing over 900 bridges as it passes through pine forests, tea gardens near Palampur, and provides glimpses into the quiet, everyday life of the Himalayan foothills. It is a slow-travel experience that rewards passengers with an authentic and deeply scenic adventure.
How to Book Your Journey
Booking a ticket for a Vistadome coach is done through the official IRCTC website or app. When searching for your train, it's crucial to select the correct class. Vistadome coaches are typically listed under 'AC Chair Car' (CC) or 'Executive Chair Car' (EC), and some booking portals might have a specific 'Vistadome AC' (EV) class. Due to their popularity, these seats sell out quickly, so it is advisable to book well in advance. The booking window usually opens 60 days before the date of travel. Ensure you are selecting a train that has these specific coaches attached, as they are not available on all services along these routes.
