The Game-Changing Journey
For years, reaching Srinagar meant either a costly flight or a long, arduous road trip from Jammu. The introduction of the Vande Bharat Express on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) changes everything. This all-weather service cuts the grueling
8-11 hour road journey to a comfortable ride of approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes. The train navigates the stunning, mountainous terrain of the Pir Panjal range, crossing engineering marvels like the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge. Two services were already running with high occupancy since their launch in mid-2025 and extension to Jammu in April 2026. Now, a third Vande Bharat has been approved, promising even more capacity and convenience for travellers. This makes spontaneous trips and budget adventures more feasible than ever.
Booking Tickets and Travel Classes
Booking a seat is straightforward via the official IRCTC website and app. Given the high demand, especially during peak tourist seasons, it’s wise to book your tickets several weeks in advance. The train generally runs six days a week, with Tuesday often being the day of non-operation for maintenance. Travellers can choose between two classes: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC). The Chair Car offers comfortable seating and is the more budget-friendly option, with fares starting at around ₹715. The Executive Chair Car provides more spacious, 180-degree rotating seats for a premium experience, costing around ₹1,320. Both classes include on-board catering and large windows to soak in the breathtaking views.
Crafting Your Srinagar Itinerary
Once you arrive in Srinagar, a world of experiences awaits. For a young traveller on a 4-5 day trip, a mix of classic sights and local exploration is ideal. Dedicate your first day to the iconic Dal Lake. Instead of just a quick tour, consider staying one night in a houseboat for the experience and then moving to a more budget-friendly guesthouse or homestay. Enjoy an early morning Shikara ride to see the floating vegetable market. Day two can be for exploring Srinagar's soul: the Mughal Gardens (Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh), the historic old city, and the Hazratbal shrine. In the evenings, explore the burgeoning cafe culture around Rajbagh and Lal Chowk. Reserve a full day for a trip to Gulmarg for its stunning meadows and the famous Gondola ride, or to Pahalgam to see the picturesque Betaab Valley.
Budgeting for Your Adventure
Kashmir can be surprisingly budget-friendly if planned well. A backpacker can manage a trip on approximately ₹1,200 – ₹1,800 per day. This includes staying in dorms or basic guesthouses, eating at local dhabas, and using shared transport. For a bit more comfort, a budget of ₹2,000 – ₹3,500 per day will get you a private room in a budget hotel and a mix of local and restaurant meals. Food is generally affordable; a meal at a local eatery can cost between ₹200 and ₹400. Your biggest expense after travel to the region will be local transport for sightseeing. Hiring a private taxi for day trips can cost ₹2,500 – ₹3,700 per day, so travelling in a group to share costs is a smart move.
Essential Prep for the Valley
Packing correctly is key to a comfortable trip. The weather in Kashmir can be unpredictable. Always carry layers, including a warm jacket, even in summer. A waterproof outer layer is a must, especially if you plan to visit between March and June. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable. For connectivity, remember that only postpaid SIM cards from other states work in Jammu and Kashmir. If you have a prepaid SIM, you'll need to purchase a new local one upon arrival. Always carry a valid government-issued ID. While most tourist areas don't require special permits, it's wise to check for the latest advisories before travelling to more remote regions.
