What Are Festival Special Trains?
During peak travel periods like Diwali, Chhath Puja, and Dussehra, the demand for train tickets far exceeds the supply of regular services. To accommodate this surge, Indian Railways operates additional trains known as 'Festival Specials'. These trains often
have unique numbers, typically starting with a '0', and may have slightly different fare structures. They are announced in batches to connect major cities with high-demand destinations across states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, providing much-needed relief to travellers. The primary goal is to increase capacity and reduce the massive waitlists on popular routes, ensuring more people can travel home for the holidays.
Method 1: The IRCTC Website
The official Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website is the primary platform for booking all train tickets, including specials. To find these trains, simply use the 'Book Ticket' feature as you normally would. Enter your source and destination stations, select your date of travel, and click 'Search'. When the results appear, special trains will be listed alongside the regular services if they are available for that route and date. Pay close attention to train numbers starting with '0' as this is the standard identifier for a special service. Since these trains are announced progressively, it’s a good idea to check frequently, especially as your travel date gets closer.
Method 2: Using the NTES App
The National Train Enquiry System (NTES) is an official Indian Railways app and website designed for real-time train information. While you cannot book tickets on NTES, it is an excellent tool for discovery. Use the 'Trains between Stations' feature to see a comprehensive list of all services on your route, including recently announced specials. Sometimes, new special trains are visible on NTES even before bookings open on IRCTC, giving you a head start. You can check the train’s full schedule, route, and running days to plan your booking strategy. The app is available for both Android and iOS devices and is a must-have for any frequent train traveller in India.
Smart Search: Think Beyond Your Main Station
One of the most effective strategies is to broaden your search. Instead of only looking for trains from your primary station, check for departures and arrivals at other major stations nearby. For example, if you are travelling from Delhi, also search for trains originating from Anand Vihar Terminal (ANVT), Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM), or Delhi Sarai Rohilla (DEE). Many special trains originate from or pass through these satellite hubs to reduce congestion at the main terminals. Similarly, check for availability at major junctions close to your destination. Being flexible with your boarding or destination station by even a few dozen kilometres can significantly increase your chances of finding a confirmed seat on a special train.
Stay Updated with Official Announcements
Indian Railways and its various zones (like Northern Railway, Western Railway, etc.) announce new special trains through official press releases and their social media channels. Following the official social media accounts of the Ministry of Railways and zonal railways can provide the earliest information. News outlets also report these announcements as soon as they are made. These announcements often include the full schedule, booking opening dates, and specific routes, giving you all the information needed to be ready when the booking window opens. This proactive approach is particularly useful as seats on high-demand routes can fill up within minutes of bookings going live.
Tips for Successful Booking
Once you've found a special train, securing a ticket is the next race. Be prepared before the booking opens. Use the 'Master List' feature on the IRCTC website or app to save passenger details in advance, which saves crucial time during checkout. Keep your payment details handy; using faster methods like UPI or the IRCTC e-wallet can prevent payment failures during peak traffic. If you are waitlisted, don't lose hope. Waitlists on special trains often clear as more coaches or new trains are sometimes added closer to the date based on demand. Finally, always double-check your journey date and train timings before confirming your booking.
