The popular journey between India's tech capital, Bengaluru, and the coastal paradise of Goa is about to get significantly faster. The Railway Board has approved a new Vande Bharat Express, slashing travel time to around 13 hours.
Introducing the Yesvantpur-Madgaon Vande Bharat Express
The Indian Railways is
set to launch a new semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Express service connecting Yesvantpur in Bengaluru with Madgaon in Goa. The Railway Board gave its official approval for the new route on October 30, 2026, marking a significant step in enhancing connectivity between Karnataka and Goa. This new service, operating under train numbers 26655/26656, is expected to commence in the third week of November 2026, although a final launch date is yet to be announced. The introduction of this train means the existing Madgaon-Mangaluru Central Vande Bharat service will be discontinued.
A Faster, More Convenient Journey
The new Vande Bharat service will reduce the journey time to approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes for the trip from Yesvantpur to Madgaon, and a slightly quicker 12 hours and 55 minutes on the return leg. This is a notable improvement compared to existing train services, which can take anywhere from 13.5 to over 15 hours to cover the route. The train will run as a daytime chair car service six days a week. Train number 26655 will depart from Yesvantpur at 7:35 AM and arrive in Madgaon at 8:55 PM, operating on all days except Wednesday. The return train, number 26656, will leave Madgaon at 8:20 AM and reach Yesvantpur at 9:15 PM, running six days a week, excluding Thursday.
A Scenic Ride Through the Western Ghats
Beyond its speed, the journey promises to be a visual delight. The route travels via Mangaluru Junction, traversing the stunning landscapes of the Western Ghats, particularly through the Sakleshpur-Subrahmanya Road section. Passengers will be treated to panoramic views of lush hills, dense forests, and picturesque valleys, making the trip an experience in itself. This scenic passage, combined with the comfort of a Vande Bharat Express, is expected to appeal to both tourists and regular commuters. However, due to the challenging terrain and steep gradients of the Ghats, the train will operate at a reduced speed of around 30 kmph on this 55 km stretch for safety.
Connecting Key Destinations
This new service will not only link Bengaluru and Goa but also enhance connectivity for numerous towns along Karnataka's interior and coastal belts. The train has 12 scheduled stops between Yesvantpur and Madgaon. Key halts include Hassan, Sakleshpur, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, Kundapura, Murdeshwar, Gokarna Road, and Karwar. This provides a direct, premium travel option for people traveling from Bengaluru to popular coastal and pilgrimage destinations without needing to change trains.
The Result of Major Infrastructure Upgrades
The introduction of this Vande Bharat service is made possible by the recent completion of electrification work on the Bengaluru–Mangaluru railway route in December 2025. This crucial upgrade allows for the operation of faster and more environmentally friendly electric locomotives through the previously challenging Ghat section. The long–term plan for the broader region also includes track doubling on the Hospet–Vasco da Gama line, a project sanctioned in 2010–11. While much of the track doubling in Karnataka is complete, sections within Goa, particularly the sensitive Castle Rock to Kulem stretch, have faced delays due to environmental clearance requirements. The eventual completion of this doubling will further enhance capacity and speed on this vital corridor.
