The Science of Plant Sweat
To understand why humid weather is deceptive, we need to talk about transpiration. This is the process where plants release water vapor from their leaves, which pulls more water up from the roots. It's essentially how a plant breathes and stays cool.
However, when the air is already saturated with moisture—as it is on a high-humidity day—the rate of transpiration slows down dramatically. The air simply can't absorb much more water from the leaves. As a result, the plant uses far less water from the soil than it would on a dry day, even if the temperature is high. Many plant owners, especially during the Indian monsoon season, notice their plants suffering despite their care, often due to this exact issue.
Why You Can’t Trust the Topsoil
Another part of the illusion is the appearance of the soil. The top inch or two of potting mix can dry out quickly, especially if you have a fan running for air circulation. This creates a visual cue that the plant is thirsty. You see dry, sometimes cracked topsoil and assume the whole pot is dry. However, just below this crust, the soil can remain saturated for days, particularly in humid conditions. Watering based only on what the surface looks like is a common trap that leads to the roots sitting in constantly soggy soil, unable to access the oxygen they need to survive. This is why a fixed watering schedule, like watering every Sunday, often fails; it doesn't account for daily changes in humidity and temperature.
Recognising the Signs of Overwatering
Ironically, an overwatered plant can look a lot like an underwatered one. A key sign is wilting leaves even when the soil is damp to the touch. This happens because the waterlogged roots have started to rot and can no longer absorb water, effectively suffocating the plant. Other telltale signs include yellowing leaves that feel soft or limp, not crispy. You might also notice leaves dropping from both the top and bottom of the plant. In more advanced cases, you may see mould or fungus growing on the soil's surface, notice a musty or rotten smell coming from the pot, or find that the base of the stem feels soft and mushy.
How to Properly Check If Your Plant Is Thirsty
Instead of relying on a schedule or the look of the topsoil, you need to become a soil moisture detective. The most reliable and low-tech method is the finger test: stick your index finger about two inches into the soil. If it comes out clean and dry, it's time to water. If soil sticks to your finger and it feels moist, wait a few more days and check again. For deeper pots, a wooden chopstick or dowel works wonders. Insert it deep into the pot, leave it for a minute, and pull it out. If the wood is dark with moisture, the plant is fine. Another pro tip is to learn the weight of your pots. Lift the plant right after you’ve watered it, and then lift it again a week later. You’ll quickly get a feel for how a light, dry pot feels compared to a heavy, watered one.
Your Humid Weather Plant Care Plan
During humid spells like the monsoon, adjust your care routine. First, extend the time between waterings. A plant that needs water weekly in the summer might only need it every 10-15 days in high humidity. Second, improve air circulation by grouping plants less tightly or using a small fan to keep air moving, which helps prevent fungal growth. Third, always check the soil moisture before watering—no exceptions. Ensure your pots have excellent drainage holes to let excess water escape. Finally, consider reducing fertiliser, as many plants slow their growth during these periods and don't need the extra nutrients.
