The Vande Bharat Advantage
For years, the primary way to reach Srinagar from Jammu was an arduous 8-to-11-hour drive on the NH-44, a route often plagued by landslides and unpredictable delays. The Vande Bharat Express changes everything. This modern, high-speed train connects Jammu Tawi
to Srinagar in approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes, offering a climate-controlled, all-weather alternative. The journey itself is an experience, taking you across the stunning Chenab Bridge, the highest railway bridge in the world, and through the Pir Panjal range. With comfortable seating, onboard catering, and large windows, the train journey becomes a memorable part of your holiday.
Booking Tickets and Timings
Booking your journey is straightforward via the official IRCTC website or the Rail Connect app. It is highly recommended to book your tickets well in advance, as the service is in high demand, with booking opening 60 days prior. There are two classes available: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC), with the latter offering wider, rotatable seats. Currently, there are multiple services running between Jammu Tawi (JAT) and Srinagar (SINA). For instance, train number 26401 departs Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and arrives in Srinagar at 11:10 AM. The return service, train 26402, leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM, reaching Jammu Tawi by 6:50 PM. These services generally run six days a week. Always double-check the latest schedule on IRCTC before your travel dates.
Crafting Your Itinerary: A 5-Day Plan
The Vande Bharat service allows you to start your Kashmir exploration the moment you arrive. Upon reaching Srinagar station before noon, you can easily transfer to your hotel or houseboat. Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar, check in, and enjoy a relaxing Shikara ride on Dal Lake in the evening. Day 2: Explore Srinagar’s famous Mughal Gardens—Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi. Their terraced layouts and stunning water features offer a glimpse into the region's royal past. Day 3: Take a day trip to Gulmarg, the 'Meadow of Flowers'. A ride on the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, provides breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks. Day 4: Journey to Pahalgam, the 'Valley of Shepherds'. Situated on the banks of the Lidder River, it’s the starting point for several treks and offers serene landscapes. You can visit Betaab Valley and Aru Valley. Day 5: Spend the morning shopping for local handicrafts and saffron in Srinagar before heading to the station for your afternoon Vande Bharat departure back to Jammu.
From Station to Sightseeing
Once you arrive at Srinagar Railway Station (SINA), you'll find various options for local transport. Prepaid taxi counters are available, which is often the most hassle-free way to get to your accommodation in areas like Dal Gate or Boulevard Road. Ride-hailing apps may have limited service, so relying on local registered taxis is a safer bet. It is advisable to pre-book a cab, especially if you are travelling in a group or with a lot of luggage. From the station, key areas like Dal Lake are approximately 12-15 kilometres away. A pre-arranged pickup through your hotel or a travel agent can also provide a seamless transition from your train journey to your city stay.
Essential Travel Tips
To make the most of your trip, keep a few things in mind. Always carry a valid government-issued photo ID, as it is mandatory for travel in the region and for booking your train ticket. The weather in Kashmir can be unpredictable, so dressing in layers is always a good idea, regardless of the season. While booking your train, a window seat is highly recommended for the incredible views; travellers suggest the right-side seats from Jammu offer better views of the Chenab Bridge. Mobile connectivity can be patchy in the tunnels, especially through the long Pir Panjal tunnel, so it's wise to download any entertainment beforehand. Finally, book your return journey well in advance, as the demand for the Srinagar to Jammu train is often just as high.
