The Journey is the Destination
The drive from Bengaluru to Wayanad, spanning roughly 280-300 kilometres, is a transformative experience. Most travellers prefer the route via Mysore, which unfolds like a cinematic reel. Leaving the urban sprawl behind, the well-maintained NH766 highway
transitions into a serene passage through history and nature. The drive cuts through the heart of Bandipur and Mudumalai Tiger Reserves, a stretch where the concrete jungle gives way to a real one. It’s not uncommon to pause for a herd of deer crossing the road or spot a wild elephant amidst the dense foliage. This part of the drive, usually taking 6-7 hours, is best enjoyed with an early start to cross the forest stretch in broad daylight, as it remains closed to traffic at night.
Wayanad’s Emerald Embrace
Upon entering Wayanad, the landscape shifts dramatically. You are greeted by misty mountains, rolling hills draped in tea and coffee plantations, and the distinct aroma of spices in the air. This corner of the Western Ghats is a mosaic of natural wonders, from the tranquil waters of Pookode Lake, perfect for a gentle boat ride, to the colossal Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India. Viewpoints like Lakkidi offer panoramic vistas of the winding ghat roads and verdant valleys below, reminding visitors why this place is fondly called the 'Green Paradise'. The pleasant climate, which hovers between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius for most of the year, makes it an ideal year-round destination for those seeking respite.
Trails for Every Trekker
For the adventurous, Wayanad is a trekking haven with trails catering to all fitness levels. The most iconic is the trek to Chembra Peak, the district's highest point at 2,100 metres. While the full summit trek is sometimes restricted, the hike up to a perennial heart-shaped lake is a rewarding experience in itself, passing through lush grasslands. For those interested in history, the trek to Edakkal Caves is a must. This moderate hike leads to ancient caves featuring petroglyphs that date back thousands of years. Other popular trails include the hike to Soochipara Falls, a stunning three-tiered waterfall, and the more challenging Banasura Hill trek, which offers spectacular views of the reservoir below.
Wildlife and Waterfalls
Beyond organized treks, Wayanad's wilderness invites exploration at every turn. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, is home to a rich diversity of fauna, including elephants, leopards, and various bird species. Jeep safaris offer a chance to delve deeper into the forest. The region is also blessed with spectacular waterfalls. Meenmutty Falls, the largest in the district, is a three-tiered cascade that requires a 2 km trek through the forest to reach. Soochipara Falls, also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, is another favourite, where the water plunges from a height of about 200 meters into a large pool, perfect for a refreshing dip after a walk through the woods.
Planning Your Weekend Escape
The best time to visit Wayanad is between October and May when the weather is cool and pleasant, making it ideal for sightseeing and trekking. An early morning start from Bengaluru, around 5 or 6 AM, is highly recommended to beat city traffic and to ensure you cross the Bandipur forest section before the 9 PM closure. It’s wise to fuel up your vehicle in Mysore or Gundlupet, as options become scarce once you enter the forest corridor. Accommodation in Wayanad ranges from luxury resorts and charming homestays nestled in plantations to budget-friendly hotels. Whether you are looking for an action-packed weekend of trekking and exploration or a quiet retreat to simply unwind in nature, Wayanad offers the perfect escape just a drive away.
