The main attractions are the serene beach and a watchtower at the Sundari Guest House complex, which offers a panoramic view of the island and the sea. To get here from Kolkata, about 130 km away, you can drive for approximately four hours. The most direct route involves driving towards Namkhana and then crossing the Hatania-Doania river. A bridge now allows smaller vehicles to cross directly, avoiding the older ferry system. Alternatively, you can take a Namkhana local train from Sealdah station to Namkhana, and from there, hire a local toto to reach the island.
Talsari Beach: Odisha's Hidden Red Crab Coast
Just across the West Bengal border in Odisha lies Talsari Beach, a serene and visually stunning destination. Situated only a few kilometres from the ever-popular Digha, Talsari offers a completely different experience. One of its most unique features is the backwaters that you may need to cross by boat to reach the main sea, especially during high tide. This creates a beautiful river-meets-sea environment that is a treat for photographers and nature lovers. Reaching Talsari from Kolkata is straightforward. The journey is about 171 km by road. Many travellers prefer to take a train from Howrah or Shalimar to Digha, which is the nearest major railway station. From Digha, Talsari is a short 25-30 minute auto-rickshaw or taxi ride away, taking you across the state border into Odisha.
Chandpur: A Virgin Beach for Solitude Seekers
If your idea of a beach trip is to feel like you have the horizon to yourself, Chandpur is your destination. Located in the East Medinipur district, it is one of the newest and cleanest beach stretches near Kolkata, still largely untouched by commercial tourism. Flanked by eerie-looking tree stumps and casuarina groves, this beach offers a sense of discovery and solitude that is hard to find elsewhere. It's the perfect place for long, uninterrupted walks, watching the sunset, and enjoying quiet moments. The beach is situated between the more known destinations of Tajpur and Shankarpur, making it a peaceful hideaway. The route from Kolkata is about 170 km. If driving, you would take the road towards Shankarpur and turn off for Chandpur. For those preferring rail, the nearest station is Digha. From Digha station, you can hire a cab or a local trekker to cover the remaining distance to this secluded spot.
Udaipur Beach: Where Bengal Meets Odisha
Nestled right on the border between West Bengal and Odisha, Udaipur Beach offers the perfect middle ground between Digha's accessibility and Talsari's tranquility. Though just 3 km from the bustling New Digha, it feels like a different world. This long, uninhabited stretch of sand is lined with casuarina trees and dotted with fishermen's shacks selling fresh seafood. Unlike the crowded main beaches, Udaipur allows for a more relaxed experience where you can swim or simply enjoy the scenic beauty without jostling for space. It's a raw, unpolluted, and serene alternative for those who want a quiet corner near a popular hub. Getting to Udaipur Beach is easy. You can travel to Digha by train or bus from Kolkata. From there, it’s a very short auto or van ride to the beach. This proximity makes it an excellent option for a spontaneous day trip or a longer, peaceful stay away from the main tourist drag.
