The only way to travel between Havelock (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil (Shaheed Dweep) is by ferry. Private operators like Makruzz, Nautika, and Green Ocean offer faster, air-conditioned catamarans with comfortable seating. A visit isn't complete without seeing Radhanagar Beach, often ranked among Asia's best beaches and famous for its spectacular sunsets. Elephant Beach is the island's hub for water sports, offering excellent opportunities for snorkelling and sea walking among vibrant coral reefs. For a quieter experience, head to Kalapathar Beach, with its serene coastline and picturesque views. Havelock is also a major centre for scuba diving, with numerous operators offering experiences for both beginners and certified divers.
Neil (Shaheed Dweep): The Tranquil Retreat
Just a short ferry ride away, Neil Island offers a completely different vibe. It's smaller, quieter, and has a more relaxed, village-like atmosphere, making it a perfect escape from the crowds. One to two nights are usually sufficient to explore its main attractions. The island is known for its three main beaches: Bharatpur Beach, close to the jetty, is ideal for glass-bottom boat rides and snorkelling in its shallow waters. Laxmanpur Beach is famous for its breathtaking sunsets, while Sitapur Beach is the go-to spot for watching the sunrise. A must-see is the Natural Bridge, a unique rock formation naturally carved by the sea, which is best visited during low tide.
Essential Tips for a Smooth Trip
To make the most of your Andaman adventure, keep a few things in mind. For getting around the islands, renting a scooter or bicycle is a popular and convenient option, especially on the compact Neil Island. Auto-rickshaws are also readily available. While booking your stay, it's wise to arrange your ferry tickets first, especially during peak season, to ensure your travel dates align. Most visitors follow a Port Blair to Havelock to Neil Island route before returning to Port Blair. Indian citizens do not need a permit to visit these main tourist islands, just a valid photo ID.
