The Official Stance: Performance Over Age
In a clear statement, BCCI President Mithun Manhas has asserted that form and fitness will be the sole criteria for selection, not a player's age. Speaking to Sportstar, Manhas clarified the board's philosophy, effectively keeping the door open for both
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. 'As far as the BCCI is concerned, we are not in a position to comment because it all depends on the selectors and the coaches. But from how I look at it, fitness and performance should be the criteria for selection, and definitely not age,' Manhas said. This declaration pushes back against the narrative that the two veterans, who will be in their late 30s and early 40s by the time of the tournament, would be automatically ruled out to make way for a younger generation. Manhas added, 'If somebody is fit to play, and you see him performing and winning games for the country, that is the only criterion we should focus on'.
The Age and Legacy Dilemma
The debate is rooted in the formidable challenge of balancing future-planning with the undeniable value of experience. By the time the 2027 World Cup kicks off in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, Virat Kohli will be nearly 39, and Rohit Sharma will be 40. Both players have already retired from T20Is, and their recent form in the 50-over format has been strong, with both scoring centuries in the recent West Indies series, which has only intensified the discussion. Cricket history is filled with examples of teams struggling to transition away from a golden generation. The BCCI's current stance suggests a pragmatic approach: if India's most accomplished batsmen are still among the best performers a year from now, their case for inclusion will be undeniable.
Mentorship Role for a New Captain
Beyond their individual contributions with the bat, the BCCI President also highlighted the crucial mentorship role the senior duo could play. With Shubman Gill now leading the ODI side, the presence of seasoned campaigners like Rohit and Kohli is seen as a significant asset. 'Having Virat, Hardik, and Rohit in the side will definitely help him,' Manhas explained, referencing the immense pressure of a World Cup campaign. He elaborated on the idea of distributed leadership, where players like Jasprit Bumrah could act as a bowling captain, easing the burden on Gill. 'They have been under pressure, and they have delivered so many times in crunch situations. So, it is a good combination,' Manhas added, framing the senior players' potential involvement as a strategic advantage for the new captain.
The Road to 2027 is Long
While the President's comments provide a clear policy direction, the final decision remains with the national selectors and the team management, led by the coach. The statement is not a guarantee of selection but rather a clarification that age itself is not a disqualifying factor. The selectors will have to weigh the consistent performances of the veterans against the imperative to blood new talent and build a core for the future. The path to the World Cup is nearly a year long, and a lot can change. Form can fluctuate, new stars can emerge, and fitness levels will be under constant scrutiny. This has set the stage for a fascinating year ahead, where every ODI series will be viewed as a data point in the larger 2027 selection puzzle.
