Why Cats Crave a Patch of Green
It might seem odd for obligate carnivores to nibble on grass, but this behaviour is completely natural. Offering wheatgrass provides a safe alternative to potentially toxic houseplants and outdoor grasses that may be treated with pesticides. [2, 15] The
benefits are numerous: the fibre content aids digestion and can help with the passage of hairballs, preventing constipation. [2, 5, 6] It's also a fantastic source of environmental enrichment for indoor cats, satisfying their instinct to graze while providing mental and sensory stimulation. [2, 5, 7] Additionally, wheatgrass is packed with nutrients like vitamins A, C, and E, as well as chlorophyll, which contribute to overall health, from better vision to a stronger immune system. Gathering Your Simple Supplies
You don’t need a green thumb or expensive equipment to get started. The process is straightforward and requires just a few basic items. First, you'll need seeds. Look for organic wheat seeds, sometimes sold as "hard red winter wheat" or simply "wheatberries". [9, 11] Next, find a suitable container; a shallow pot or tray with drainage holes is ideal to prevent waterlogging. [9, 20] You'll also need a growing medium. Organic potting soil is a great choice, though some kits use soilless options like coconut coir. [11, 20] Finally, have a spray bottle for gentle watering and a clean jar or bowl for soaking the seeds. [20]
A Step-by-Step Planting Guide
Growing your cat's new favourite snack is easier than you think. Start by soaking about two tablespoons of wheat seeds in water for 8-12 hours; this kickstarts the germination process. [9, 20] While they soak, prepare your container by filling it with about one to two inches of moist potting soil. [9, 20] Once soaking is complete, drain the seeds and spread them evenly in a single layer over the soil, pressing them down gently to ensure good contact. [9] Lightly sprinkle a little more soil on top. [21] Mist the surface thoroughly with your spray bottle, and you're ready for the next step. [20]
Creating the Perfect Growing Conditions
For the first few days, you can cover the container with plastic wrap or a clear lid to create a mini-greenhouse effect, which helps retain moisture and encourages sprouting. [9, 20] Place the container in a spot that receives bright, indirect sunlight; direct sun can be too intense. [9, 11] Once you see sprouts emerge (usually within a couple of days), remove the cover to allow for air circulation. [20] Water daily with your spray bottle, keeping the soil moist but not soggy. [11] The grass grows quickly, and you should have a lush green patch in about a week. [21]
Troubleshooting: Preventing Mold
The most common issue when growing wheatgrass indoors is mold, which appears as a fuzzy white or blue-green growth at the base of the stalks. [10, 12, 19] This is usually caused by three things: poor air circulation, overwatering, and planting seeds too densely. [10, 19] To prevent it, ensure your container has excellent drainage, don't pack the seeds too tightly, and consider using a small fan on a low setting to keep air moving. [14, 16, 19] If you do spot mold, it’s best to start a new batch, ensuring your container is sterilized and your technique is adjusted to be a bit drier and with better airflow. [12]
Harvest and Happy Chewing
Your wheatgrass is ready for your cat when it reaches about 4 to 6 inches in height, which typically takes 7 to 10 days. [20, 22] There’s no special harvesting required. Simply place the pot in a location where your cat can safely access it and let them graze directly from the container. [3] Some cats will dive right in, while others might need some gentle encouragement. [13] Keep an eye on their consumption; while wheatgrass is healthy, eating too much at once can sometimes cause mild vomiting or diarrhoea. [2, 4] Most cats, however, will naturally regulate their intake and enjoy their personal patch of green. A single patch will last one to three weeks before it begins to yellow, at which point you can simply start the easy process all over again.
