A Game-Changer for Kashmir Connectivity
The much-awaited Vande Bharat Express is now fully operational between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, marking a significant milestone in the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. This all-weather service drastically cuts down travel time to under
five hours, a stark contrast to the often unpredictable 8-to-11-hour journey by road on NH-44. The service was officially flagged off on April 30, 2026, and has been met with high demand, running at full occupancy since its launch. In fact, due to the overwhelming response, a third Vande Bharat service for the route has already been approved to handle the passenger rush.
The Route, Timings, and Stoppages
Currently, two Vande Bharat trains operate daily services between Jammu Tawi (JAT) and Srinagar (SINA), with a third one announced. A key morning service is Train 26401, which departs Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and reaches Srinagar at 11:10 AM. The return train, 26402, leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM and arrives back in Jammu Tawi by 6:50 PM. These services run six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. The primary halts along this scenic 269-km journey include Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK), Reasi, and Banihal. The newly approved third train will also include a stop at Udhampur (Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station), further improving connectivity.
The Vande Bharat Experience
Travelling on the Vande Bharat is an experience in itself. The train is equipped with modern amenities, including comfortable AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC) coaches with reclining seats. The Executive class offers wider seats for a more premium experience. Large panoramic windows are a key feature, designed to offer breathtaking views as the train navigates the stunning Himalayan landscape, including crossing the world's highest railway arch bridge over the Chenab River. Onboard catering is included in the fare, often featuring a Kashmiri spread that comes highly recommended. The journey also takes you through numerous tunnels, including the 11-km long Pir Panjal tunnel, a marvel of engineering.
How to Book Your Tickets
Booking tickets for the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat is a straightforward process handled through the official Indian Railways channels. You can book your seats via the IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) or its official mobile app, 'IRCTC Rail Connect'. When searching, use the station codes JAT for Jammu Tawi and SINA for Srinagar. You will need to filter for the Vande Bharat Express or use the specific train numbers (e.g., 26401, 26403). Fares for the AC Chair Car typically range from ₹715 to ₹880, while the Executive Chair Car costs between ₹1,320 and ₹1,515. It's crucial to carry a valid government-issued photo ID during your journey, as it is checked during boarding and travel.
Insider Tips for a Perfect Journey
To make the most of your trip, a little planning goes a long way. For the best views of the iconic Chenab Bridge when travelling from Jammu to Srinagar, try to get a window seat on the right side of the train. For stunning vistas of the Pir Panjal range after Banihal, the left side is preferable. Booking your tickets well in advance is highly recommended as the service is in high demand, especially for the return journey from Srinagar to Jammu. Also, be prepared for significant temperature differences; it can be warm in Jammu while the areas around Banihal can be quite cool, so dressing in layers is a smart choice.
