For decades, quality assurance (QA) in India's IT sector involved armies of manual testers meticulously checking software for bugs. This role is facing one of the most significant transformations. AI is now capable of generating test cases, predicting
defect hotspots, and running regression tests automatically, reducing the need for repetitive manual execution. The future for QA professionals lies not in executing pre-written test cases, but in designing intelligent quality strategies. The role is evolving into a 'Quality Engineer' who uses AI as a tool to focus on complex edge cases, user experience validation, and managing the automated testing frameworks themselves. The demand is shifting from execution to decision-making.
Entry-Level Coding and Development
The fear that AI will replace developers is widespread, but the reality is more nuanced. AI coding assistants are automating a significant portion of the routine, boilerplate work that was once the training ground for junior developers. This includes writing basic functions, simple bug fixes, and standard unit tests. As a result, the bar for entry-level roles has been raised. Companies now expect new hires to be proficient in using AI tools to accelerate their work, not to have the AI think for them. The job is not disappearing; rather, it is evolving. Developers are now freed up to concentrate on higher-value tasks like system architecture, complex problem-solving, and integrating AI tools creatively into products.
L1 and L2 Customer Support
India's massive BPO and IT support industry is on the front lines of AI-driven change. AI-powered chatbots and voice assistants are increasingly capable of handling common, first-level support queries—from password resets to order tracking—without human intervention. Gartner predicts that by 2026, a significant percentage of customer interactions will be managed by AI. This doesn't eliminate the need for human agents but shifts their focus. The value of human support agents will increasingly be in handling complex, escalated issues that require empathy, critical thinking, and nuanced problem-solving—skills that AI cannot yet replicate effectively. The job is moving from resolving high volumes of simple queries to managing a smaller number of high-complexity interactions.
Data Entry and Process-Based Roles
Roles centered on repetitive, rule-based tasks are the most vulnerable to automation. This includes data entry clerks, back-office processing staff, and basic bookkeepers. Intelligent software can now scan documents, extract information, and update databases with incredible speed and accuracy. The World Economic Forum has consistently listed data entry as one of the fastest-declining roles globally due to automation. For professionals in these roles, the path forward involves pivoting towards adjacent functions that require human judgment. This could mean transitioning into data analytics, process automation oversight, or quality assurance roles where the job is to manage and validate the output of the automated systems rather than performing the manual entry itself.
System Administration and IT Operations
Traditional system administration, which involves monitoring server health, managing network configurations, and applying patches, is also being reshaped by AI. AI-powered operational tools can now perform predictive maintenance, identify anomalies in real-time, and even trigger self-healing processes to resolve issues before they impact users. This reduces the need for constant manual oversight. The role of a system administrator is therefore becoming more strategic. Instead of just maintaining existing systems, they are increasingly focused on designing resilient cloud infrastructure, strengthening cybersecurity defences against AI-powered threats, and managing the sophisticated AI tools that oversee the network's health.
