Southeast Asia remains a top choice for Indian travellers, and Malaysia is making it even more appealing. The country has extended its visa-free entry policy for Indian nationals all the way through December 31, 2026. This allows for a stay of up to 30
days for tourism purposes without the need for a traditional visa. All you need is a valid passport, return tickets, and proof of accommodation. Before you fly, you must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within three days of your arrival. This simple step has replaced lengthy visa applications, opening up quick trips to explore everything from Kuala Lumpur’s futuristic skyline to the historic streets of Penang.
Sri Lanka: Zero-Fee Travel to the Emerald Isle
Our island neighbour, Sri Lanka, continues to offer one of the most convenient travel schemes for Indians. The country has extended its program offering a free Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for tourists from India and 39 other nations. Effective from May 2026, Indian passport holders do not need to pay any visa fee for a 30-day stay. While the ETA is still a mandatory online application you must complete before departure, the process is quick and the government fee is zero for tourist visits. This policy makes exploring Sri Lanka’s ancient ruins, lush tea plantations, and stunning coastline a hassle-free and affordable option for a late-2026 holiday.
Thailand: Visa-Free Access Confirmed
Thailand has long been a favourite, and its entry policies are adapting to keep it that way. While a generous 60-day visa exemption scheme was in place, the Thai Cabinet has approved a revised framework. Under the new rules, which will take effect 15 days after being published in the Royal Gazette, India remains on the visa-exempt list, granting travellers a 30-day stay for tourism without a fee. This decision cancelled an earlier proposal that would have shifted Indians to a paid Visa on Arrival category. As of early August 2026, the new rules are not yet in effect, so the 60-day stamp is still being given, but travellers planning for later in the year should expect the 30-day visa-free stay.
Kenya: A Safari Adventure with Simplified Entry
For those dreaming of an African safari, Kenya has radically simplified its entry system. Since January 2024, Kenya has abolished traditional visa requirements for all foreign visitors, including Indians, and replaced them with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system. For a fee of about $33 USD, travellers can apply online before their trip and receive approval to enter. The eTA is valid for a single entry and allows a stay of up to 90 days, perfect for exploring the Maasai Mara, Amboseli National Park, and beyond. This replaces the previous, more complex e-Visa process and eliminates the need for any visa on arrival.
Other Timeless Visa-Friendly Havens
Beyond these recent updates, many countries continue to offer straightforward entry for Indian passport holders. Destinations like Mauritius and Seychelles in the Indian Ocean provide visa-free access for 90 days and 30 days respectively, making them perfect for a romantic getaway or a relaxing beach holiday. The Maldives offers a free visa on arrival for 30 days. In the Caribbean, countries like Jamaica, Barbados, and Dominica welcome Indian tourists without a prior visa. For a quick trip closer to home, Nepal and Bhutan remain the most accessible, with virtually open borders for Indian citizens. These destinations provide a wide array of options, from tropical paradises to Himalayan adventures, all without the bureaucratic hurdles.
