A Modern Alternative to Festive Chaos
For decades, festive travel has meant navigating overcrowded trains or expensive last-minute flights. The Vande Bharat Express offers a compelling middle ground. As a semi-high-speed, self-propelled trainset, it accelerates and decelerates faster than
conventional trains, significantly cutting down journey times on key routes. This makes it an ideal choice for trips under 800 kilometres, turning what might have been a gruelling overnight journey into a comfortable day trip. Compared to Shatabdi Express, its closest competitor, Vande Bharat often has fewer stops and higher operational speeds, making it the quicker option on many corridors. This efficiency is a game-changer during the holidays, giving you more time with family and less time in transit.
Strategic Booking Is Your First Step
Securing a seat on a Vande Bharat train during the festive season requires planning. Bookings open 60 days in advance on the official IRCTC website and the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. To maximise your chances, be ready to book at 8:00 AM on the opening day, as seats on popular routes fill up within minutes. A crucial tip for 2026 is to ensure your IRCTC account is linked with your Aadhaar, as this is now a requirement for booking on the opening day of reservations. Have all passenger details saved in your 'Master List' on IRCTC to speed up the checkout process. For payments, UPI or the IRCTC iMudra wallet are generally the fastest options. Given the high demand, it is wise to have a backup train or travel date in mind.
What About Last-Minute Travel?
If you've missed the 60-day booking window, all is not lost, but options are limited. Vande Bharat trains do have a Tatkal quota, which opens one day before the journey at 10:00 AM for AC classes (Chair Car and Executive Class). However, these seats are extremely limited and disappear in seconds. No concessions are applicable on Tatkal tickets. Another option is to look for 'current availability' after the chart is prepared, which is typically a few hours before departure. You can book these available seats online or at station counters. However, relying on this during the festive rush is a significant gamble. Your best bet for last-minute travel might be checking for special festival services announced by Indian Railways.
Special Services for the Festive Rush
Recognising the immense demand, Indian Railways often operates special festival services on high-traffic routes. For the 2026 festive season, a Vande Bharat Festival Special has been announced between New Delhi and Patna to clear the rush for Diwali and Chhath Puja. This service will run on specific days from October 16 to November 26, 2026, providing much-needed capacity. These special trains follow the same booking process through IRCTC. Travellers on this and other busy routes should keep an eye on official announcements from Indian Railways for similar services that might be introduced. Booking these as soon as they are announced is crucial.
Onboard Experience: Comfort and Convenience
The Vande Bharat experience is designed to be a significant upgrade from conventional train travel. The fully air-conditioned coaches feature comfortable, reclining seats, with the Executive Class offering 180-degree rotating seats for a panoramic view. The interiors are modern, with automatic doors, large windows, and bio-vacuum toilets similar to those on aircraft. Each seat is equipped with charging points and a reading light. Meals are included in the fare if you opt-in during booking and are served at your seat. Onboard Wi-Fi for infotainment is also available, though connectivity can be inconsistent. The fully sealed gangways reduce noise, providing a quieter and more pleasant journey.
Is It Worth the Price?
Vande Bharat fares are higher than those of Shatabdi or other express trains but are generally lower than airfares on the same routes. For example, the estimated AC Chair Car fare for the Delhi-Patna special service is around ₹2,600. When considering the cost, factor in the time saved and the superior comfort. For journeys between four to eight hours, the train offers a compelling value proposition by eliminating airport security hassles and long check-in times. The experience is punctual, clean, and efficient, making the premium price justifiable for many who prioritise a smooth and swift festive journey.
