A New Daily Connection to the Coast
Indian Railways has introduced a much-anticipated daily express train, finally addressing the long-standing demand for better connectivity between Mumbai and the southern Konkan region. The service, operating as train number 15087 from Chhatrapati Shivaji
Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Sawantwadi Road and 15088 for the return journey, was flagged off in early September 2026. Unlike seasonal or festival-special trains, this daily service provides a reliable, year-round option for travellers, making spontaneous weekend planning a real possibility. Spanning approximately 510 kilometres, the route is designed to benefit tourists, families, and regular commuters alike.
Perfect Timings for a Weekend Escape
The schedule for the new CSMT-Sawantwadi Express seems tailor-made for maximizing a weekend trip. The train is scheduled to depart from CSMT at 11:55 PM, allowing travellers to board after finishing their work week. You can sleep through the night and wake up as you enter the picturesque Konkan region, arriving at Sawantwadi Road at 2:15 PM the next day. For the journey back, the train departs Sawantwadi Road at 5:20 PM, pulling into CSMT at 6:40 AM the following morning. This schedule allows you to enjoy a full final day in Konkan and still make it back to Mumbai in time for the start of a new week, making it an efficient choice for short getaways.
Gateway to Konkan's Treasures
With 22 stops along the route, the new service opens up a wide array of destinations in the Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts. Key halts include Panvel, Roha, Khed, Chiplun, Sangameshwar Road, and Ratnagiri, famous for its Alphonso mangoes and pristine beaches. Further south, the train stops at Kankavli, Sindhudurg, and Kudal, which serve as gateways to historical sea forts, snorkelling hotspots like Tarkarli, and the vibrant local culture of Malvan. Whether you're seeking the tranquility of a quiet beach, the adventure of water sports, or the charm of a coastal village, this train puts numerous options within easy reach.
How It Stacks Up with Other Options
While the Konkan route is already served by popular trains like the high-speed Tejas Express and the convenient Jan Shatabdi, the new daily express carves out its own unique space. The Tejas offers a faster, premium daytime journey, while the Jan Shatabdi is a favourite among budget-conscious day travellers. This new service distinguishes itself with its overnight schedule, which saves travellers a day of travel time and the cost of a hotel night. Compared to driving, which can be exhausting and subject to traffic, the train offers a more relaxed and scenic journey, especially through the lush, post-monsoon landscapes the Konkan Railway is famous for.
Booking Your Coastal Getaway
Booking for the CSMT-Sawantwadi Road Express (15087/15088) is available through the standard Indian Railways channels. Tickets can be purchased online via the IRCTC website or mobile app, as well as at railway reservation counters. Given the popularity of the Konkan route, especially on long weekends and during festival seasons like Ganpati Chaturthi, it is advisable to book your tickets well in advance. During peak travel times, Indian Railways often announces additional special services to manage the rush, providing even more options for travellers heading to the coast.
