Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway
One of the most anticipated projects, the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, is set to drastically reduce travel time between Ahmedabad and the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR). This 109-km, four-lane expressway is expected to cut the journey to about 45 minutes, down from over two hours. For travellers, this means quicker access to the region and the upcoming Dholera International Airport, as well as the historic Lothal National Maritime Heritage Complex. The expressway, which was reported as nearly complete and inaugurated in early 2026, is a critical part of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor.
Delhi-Mumbai Expressway's Gujarat Corridors
As a key transit state for the monumental Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Gujarat is benefiting from several newly operational sections. Stretches like Godhra-Vadodara and Vadodara-Bharuch are now open, offering a seamless and faster drive. The full Vadodara-Mumbai section is expected to slash travel time between the two major cities from eight hours to just four. This not only eases travel between Gujarat and Maharashtra but also improves access to South Gujarat's tourist destinations like Saputara and the Dandi heritage route.
The Future of Rail Travel
Gujarat's railway network is also undergoing a significant upgrade, with projects focusing on high-speed travel, better connectivity to tourist and pilgrimage sites, and increased capacity. These developments promise to make train travel a more attractive option for explorers of all kinds.
Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train)
The flagship Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is steadily progressing, especially within the Gujarat portion. While the entire 508-km corridor will take time, the first section between Surat and Bilimora is targeted for commissioning in the near future. With trains expected to run at speeds up to 320 km/h, the project will revolutionise travel between India's financial capital and Gujarat's commercial hub, with the first service on the corridor anticipated around August 2027.
Ahmedabad-Rajkot Semi High-Speed Rail
Connecting Saurashtra's commercial hub with Ahmedabad, this semi-high-speed rail project aims to reduce the journey time to just two hours. The line is designed for trains to operate at a top speed of 160 kmph, acting as a vital feeder route to the main bullet train corridor. This will significantly boost connectivity for business and leisure travellers heading to and from the Saurashtra region.
Enhanced Regional Connectivity
Beyond the headline projects, numerous gauge conversion and line doubling works are enhancing connectivity to every corner of the state. Lines are being upgraded to connect remote areas and pilgrimage sites like Dwarka, Ambaji, and those in the Kutch region, making them more accessible to tourists. Recently in September 2026, several new railway projects were launched, including new lines and doubling of tracks, to further improve passenger movement across Gujarat and neighbouring states.
