A Major Boost for Festive Travel
In a move set to benefit millions, Indian Railways will operate hundreds of special train services to clear the expected passenger rush during the upcoming festival season. Central Railway has announced it will run 418 special services connecting Mumbai
with key destinations across the country. These services are strategically planned for October and November 2026, covering the peak travel periods for Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja. The primary goal is to enhance connectivity and provide a smoother, more convenient travel experience for passengers heading to their hometowns or participating in the city's vibrant celebrations. These special trains will operate from major hubs like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT).
Connecting Mumbai to Key Destinations
The festive expansion focuses heavily on long-distance routes that see high demand during this period. Central Railway is launching daily special trains between CSMT and Gorakhpur, totalling 64 services from mid-October to mid-November. Additionally, weekly and bi-weekly specials will connect Mumbai with numerous other cities. Notable additions include weekly AC services to Chennai and Bengaluru, and a weekly superfast service to Nagpur. Further connections include bi-weekly trains to Latur and weekly services to Kolhapur. To cater to travellers heading south, special trains will also run from Mumbai to Thiruvananthapuram and Madgaon, improving connectivity along the Konkan coast to Goa and Kerala.
Focus on Local Crowd Management
While many new services are for outstation travel, the railways are also mindful of the immense pressure on the suburban network within Mumbai. Learning from the massive crowds seen during the recent Ganpati Visarjan, where Charni Road station alone handled nearly half a million passengers, authorities are gearing up for the local festive rush. For Navratri, which often involves late-night travel for Garba and Dandiya events, special local services are anticipated. Western Railway has previously run late-night local trains between Churchgate and Virar during the festival and similar measures are expected this year to ensure commuters can travel safely after the celebrations wind down. These services are crucial for managing the flow of people and preventing the dangerous overcrowding that can occur during festive peaks.
Booking and Travel Information
Bookings for most of these special festive trains opened in the last week of September 2026. Passengers are advised to book their tickets well in advance through the official IRCTC website, mobile app, or at computerised reservation centres. It is important to note that these services operate as 'special trains' and may have special fare structures. Railway authorities have urged passengers to travel only with valid, confirmed tickets to avoid inconvenience. For real-time updates on train schedules, delays, and platform information, commuters should regularly check the NTES portal or trusted railway information apps before starting their journey. This proactive planning can help ensure a hassle-free travel experience during the busiest time of the year.
