A New Perspective on a Classic Route
Train travel enthusiasts and tourists have a new reason to celebrate as Southern Railway has introduced a Vistadome coach on the Madurai–Guruvayur Express (Train No. 16327/16328). This addition transforms a regular train ride into a premium sightseeing
experience, allowing passengers to immerse themselves in the stunning natural beauty that defines the journey between these two iconic temple towns. The Vistadome coach, known for its glass roof and wide panoramic windows, is designed to offer an almost 360-degree view of the surroundings. This service aims to boost tourism along the route, which is renowned for its passage through the Western Ghats, offering a visual treat that was previously missed by many conventional train travellers. It's an invitation to rediscover a familiar route through a completely new and luxurious lens.
The Scenic Splendour of the Ghats
The true highlight of this journey is the stretch between Sengottai and Punalur, a section celebrated for its incredible scenery. As the train winds its way through the Western Ghats, passengers in the Vistadome coach will be treated to uninterrupted views of dense green forests, mist-clad mountains, and cascading waterfalls, especially during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. The route features several tunnels and historic British-era bridges, including the iconic 13-arch bridge (Pathimoonu Kannara Palam). The large windows of the Vistadome coach ensure that you won't miss a moment of this picturesque landscape. The journey offers a tranquil escape, showcasing the vibrant biodiversity and verdant topography of the region in a way that no road trip can match. It’s a photographer’s delight and a nature lover’s dream come true.
Luxury on Rails: Vistadome Features
What sets the Vistadome coach apart are its state-of-the-art facilities designed for comfort and sightseeing. The most prominent feature is the transparent glass roof, which can be made opaque with the flip of a switch, allowing passengers to gaze at the sky or shield themselves from intense sunlight. The coach is equipped with large observation windows that offer a wide-angle view of the passing scenery. Adding to the comfort are the seats, which can rotate 180 degrees, enabling passengers to face the direction of the best views regardless of the train's movement. An observation lounge at one end of the coach provides a unique vantage point for taking photographs and soaking in the atmosphere. Other amenities include a GPS-based information system, Wi-Fi, and clean, modern bio-toilets, ensuring a comfortable and engaging journey from start to finish.
Schedule and the October 23 Puzzle
The Vistadome coach service is set to begin its journey from Madurai on October 22. The train, No. 16327, departs from Madurai Junction daily, offering passengers the chance to experience the scenic route. However, the return journey from Guruvayur, Train No. 16328, with the Vistadome coach will commence a day later, on October 23. This one-day gap is not a mystery but a standard operational procedure for new services. The inaugural run from Madurai allows the train rake to complete its full journey and be positioned correctly at Guruvayur for its scheduled return the following day. This ensures that the daily service can run smoothly and without any logistical hitches from October 23 onwards. So, travellers planning a round trip should factor in this initial staggered start when making their bookings.
Fares and How to Book Your Seat
The fare for the Vistadome coach is priced at a premium compared to other classes, reflecting the enhanced experience and amenities it offers. The ticket price is comparable to that of an Executive Class chair car, making it an accessible luxury for those looking for a special travel experience. Bookings for the Vistadome coach on the Madurai–Guruvayur Express are now open and can be made through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website and its mobile app. Tickets can also be purchased at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters at railway stations. Given the high demand for Vistadome services on other scenic routes across India, it is highly advisable to book your tickets well in advance, especially for travel on weekends and public holidays, to avoid disappointment.
