A New Bridge to the Great White North
The big news for aspiring travellers is Air India's new seasonal, non-stop service between Mumbai and Toronto. Starting October 25, 2026, and running until March 26, 2027, the airline will operate three weekly flights on this route, making it the only
carrier offering a direct connection between the two cities during that period. This is a significant development, as it eliminates the hassle of connecting through Delhi or other international hubs in Europe or the Middle East. The service will use upgraded Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, featuring First, Business, and Economy class cabins, and will add nearly 2,000 seats each week between India and Canada. This expansion is a clear response to the strong demand for travel driven by deep people-to-people connections between the two countries.
Navigating the Canadian Visa Process
Before you can pack your bags, the first step is securing a Canadian Visitor Visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). Indian citizens cannot get a visa on arrival. The entire application process is now done online through the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) portal. A crucial part of the application is providing biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) at a designated Visa Application Centre (VAC). To improve your chances, you must prove strong ties to India—such as a stable job, property, or family commitments—to assure immigration officers that you will return after your visit. You'll also need to show proof of sufficient funds to cover your trip. While the process is straightforward, it is detailed, so it's wise to start at least a few months before your planned travel dates.
When to Go and What to Budget
Canada is a country of four distinct seasons, each offering a different experience. Summer (June to August) is peak season, with warm weather perfect for festivals and exploring national parks, but it's also the most expensive time. For beautiful scenery and lower costs, consider the shoulder seasons: September to October for stunning autumn colours, or April and May for pleasant spring weather. Budgeting is key, as Canada can be pricey. A 10-day trip can range from ₹2,50,000 to ₹3,00,000 per person on a budget, covering flights, accommodation, food, and activities. A mid-range trip might cost between ₹3,50,000 and ₹4,50,000. Flights are a major component; booking during the off-peak season (like November or March) can lead to significant savings.
Planning Your Canadian Itinerary
Canada is the second-largest country in the world, so trying to see everything in one trip is unrealistic. It's best to focus on one region. Since the new flight lands in Toronto, exploring Eastern Canada is a natural choice. You can immerse yourself in the multicultural energy of Toronto, visit the iconic CN Tower, and take a day trip to the magnificent Niagara Falls. From there, you could travel to Ottawa, the nation's capital, and the French-speaking cities of Montreal and Quebec City, which offer a taste of European charm. For transport within cities, public transit is efficient and easy to navigate with apps. For exploring further afield, renting a car or taking regional trains and buses are great options.
Essential Tips for First-Time Visitors
A few local customs and practical tips can make your trip smoother. Canada is largely a cashless society, so a good forex card or a credit card with tap-to-pay is essential. Tipping at restaurants (around 15-20%) is standard practice. Also, remember that the price you see on a tag is not the final price; sales tax is added at the checkout counter. Pack in layers, as weather can be unpredictable. And don't forget a universal power adapter for your electronics. With these preparations, you'll be ready to make the most of your Canadian adventure.
