The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed the formation of an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. This is the first step towards a more significant weather event. Current forecasts indicate this circulation is highly likely
to intensify into a low-pressure area around September 11. This new system is expected to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh, before moving inland. Such systems are the primary drivers of monsoon rainfall, and its appearance during a sluggish phase of the season is a welcome development for many.
Breaking a Worrying Dry Spell
This potential rainfall comes at a critical time. August 2026 was not just dry; it was historically so. The country experienced its hottest August since 1901 and received about 36% less rainfall than normal for the month. This pushed the cumulative seasonal deficit for the monsoon to around 14% by the end of August, with the ongoing El Niño conditions being a major contributing factor. While some northern and central parts of India received rain from other systems, large swathes of Peninsular India have been exceptionally dry, leading to concerns over water reservoirs and agriculture. The southern peninsula, in particular, has seen a quiet monsoon, with rainfall activity remaining subdued.
Which Regions Can Expect Relief?
The primary beneficiary of this new system is expected to be eastern and parts of central India. The IMD has forecast that the low-pressure area will likely bring enhanced rainfall to these regions. Heavy rainfall is specifically predicted for several districts in south Bengal, including Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Bankura, through the week. The system's initial formation off the coasts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh means these states are also on high alert for increased rainfall. While the immediate effect on the parched southern peninsula may be limited, forecasters suggest the system could bring a 'gentle revival' of rain there after an initial quiet period of about a week.

A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal acts like a powerful engine for the monsoon. By creating an area of lower atmospheric pressure over the sea, it draws in the surrounding moist air.
