The concept behind reflective roof paints, often called 'cool roofs', is straightforward and similar to why you might choose a white shirt over a black one on a hot day. Dark, conventional roofs can absorb as much as 90% of the sun's heat, transferring
it directly into your home. This makes top-floor rooms uncomfortably hot and forces air conditioners to work much harder. Cool roof paints work in two ways. The roof must be thoroughly cleaned of all dust, debris, and grease to ensure proper adhesion. Any cracks or damage should be repaired first. The paint can then be applied using a roller or, for larger areas, a sprayer. While it can be a DIY project for those comfortable working on their roof, hiring a professional ensures an even application and proper surface preparation for long-lasting results. Typically, two coats are recommended for optimal performance.
Are There Any Downsides?
For most urban homeowners in India, the benefits of a cool roof far outweigh the drawbacks. One common concern is whether a reflective roof would be a disadvantage in winter by preventing the sun from warming the house. However, research shows that the potential heat gain from a dark roof in winter is minimal due to shorter days, cloudier skies, and the lower angle of the sun.
