As India gears up for another blockbuster festive season, a parallel boom is unfolding in the job market. A significant 7% year-on-year surge in festive hiring is underway, creating a wave of short-term employment across the country.
The Numbers Behind the Surge
Recent industry data
reveals that India's festive job market grew by 7% in 2026 compared to the previous year, translating to approximately 1,27,080 new white-collar and gig roles created in the run-up to the season. This growth is particularly notable as it comes at a time when the broader white-collar job market has seen a general slowdown. Some earlier forecasts from staffing firms like TeamLease and Adecco had projected an even wider boom of 15-20% growth, indicating a massive demand for a temporary workforce to manage the country's biggest consumption period. This seasonal hiring spree is no longer just a minor adjustment but a large-scale, planned economic activity.
E-commerce and Quick Commerce Fuel the Demand
The engine driving this hiring frenzy is the explosive growth of e-commerce and the rapid rise of quick commerce. With festive online sales projected to see gross merchandise value (GMV) grow by as much as 25% over last year, companies are racing to scale up their operations. Major players like Amazon and Flipkart are at the forefront of this trend. Amazon India announced it has created over 1.6 lakh seasonal work opportunities, while Flipkart is generating more than 2.5 lakh direct and indirect roles to handle the surge. The primary goal is to ensure that the millions of orders placed during massive sale events are fulfilled smoothly and delivered on time, a task that requires a significant, albeit temporary, expansion of their workforce.
The All-Important Last Mile
At the heart of this hiring wave are last-mile delivery roles. These are the jobs that ensure a package completes its journey from a local hub to a customer's doorstep. According to an Indeed survey, delivery and last-mile executives are one of the most in_demand job categories this season. The numbers from major companies underscore this focus. Flipkart, for instance, stated that around 60% of its new festive opportunities—nearly 1.4 lakh positions—are in last mile delivery alone. To support this, the company has added over 900 new festive delivery hubs across the country, highlighting the critical infrastructure required to manage the final leg of the delivery process.
More Than Just Delivery Drivers
While delivery executives are the public face of the festive boom, they are supported by a vast network of workers in other crucial roles. Warehousing is a massive area of hiring, with 'pickers and packers' being just as sought after as delivery personnel. These employees work in sprawling fulfilment centres, sorting and packing goods for dispatch. Other in demand roles include inventory coordinators, fulfilment executives, and customer service associates who handle queries and returns. This ecosystem of temporary jobs ensures the entire supply chain, from the warehouse shelf to the customer's front door, operates at maximum efficiency during the peak demand period.
A Boost for Workers and Smaller Cities
For hundreds of thousands of people, this seasonal work provides a valuable opportunity to earn additional income. The roles are predominantly filled by early career professionals, with those having 0–6 years of experience making up about 70% of the festive hires. Many companies are also focusing on inclusive hiring, bringing more women and first time job seekers into the workforce. Geographically, this boom is no longer confined to big metros. With the expansion of e commerce into regional markets, Tier–2 and Tier–3 cities like Jaipur, Lucknow, Surat, and Coimbatore are seeing faster hiring growth than the metros. This trend is helping to distribute economic opportunities more widely across the country.
