Contrast water therapy (CWT) is a recovery technique that involves alternating between hot and cold water immersion. For centuries, athletes and wellness enthusiasts have used this method to bounce back faster. The science behind it is straightforward:
when you immerse your body in cold water, your blood vessels constrict (a process called vasoconstriction), and when you switch to hot water, they expand (vasodilation). This rapid alternating creates a 'pumping' action in your circulatory system. Think of it as a workout for your blood vessels, helping to increase blood flow and deliver more oxygen to your tired muscles while flushing out metabolic waste products that contribute to soreness.
Why It's a Game-Changer for Humid Runs
Running in high humidity is uniquely challenging. The moisture in the air prevents your sweat from evaporating effectively, making it harder for your body to cool down. This can lead to a higher core temperature and increased physical stress. Effective recovery becomes even more critical in these conditions.
