For instance, the government plans to set up AI labs in thousands of schools and hundreds of colleges to build skills from the ground up. Simultaneously, major corporations are launching their own labs. Just recently, Microsoft announced a partnership to establish five AI labs at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) to foster hands-on learning. Similarly, CHRIST (Deemed to be University) has partnered with IBM to launch an innovation centre focused on enterprise AI technologies like watsonx. Tech giants like Cognizant are also hiring for their new AI labs, seeking Generative AI Architects and AI Solution Architects. These roles are not limited to candidates with advanced degrees. Many labs offer internships and positions for recent graduates, providing a direct pathway from campus to cutting-edge research. The demand is so high that NASSCOM estimates there are 1.4 lakh open postings for roles like LLM fine-tuning, with a talent pool of less than 8,000 engineers in India. This intense demand is significantly boosting starting salaries, with a strong AI skillset lifting a fresher's CTC from a typical ₹4-5 LPA to a range of ₹8-15 LPA.
Bridging the Critical Skills Gap

Job postings in 2026 reveal a strong preference for practical, hands-on skills that go beyond textbook knowledge. The most in-demand technical skills include Python, SQL, and proficiency in deep-learning frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow. However, the real differentiators are now more specialised abilities. Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), vector databases, and fine-tuning Large Language Models (LLMs) are frequently cited as requirements, not just preferences. Employers are increasingly looking for candidates who combine domain expertise—in fields like finance, marketing, or law—with AI literacy.
