The Familiar Travel Dilemma
Every year, during summer holidays and festival seasons, millions of students across India embark on long journeys. This mass movement creates an enormous strain on public transport. Bus tickets, especially on popular routes, are snapped up weeks in advance,
and those that remain are often sold at inflated prices. Overcrowding is a given, turning what should be an exciting trip into a test of endurance. Buses can be prone to delays due to traffic and road conditions, and long-distance overnight journeys can be particularly tiring and uncomfortable.
Why Trains Are a Smarter Choice This Season
In response to this predictable surge, Indian Railways has announced a significant number of special train services designed to ease the rush. For students, these trains offer several key advantages over buses. Firstly, safety and comfort are generally higher on a train journey. With more space to move around, dedicated berths for sleeping on long routes, and access to onboard washroom facilities, train travel is significantly less taxing. Secondly, trains are often more economical, as fares are regulated and less susceptible to the wild price surges seen in the private bus sector during peak demand. Finally, for long distances, trains provide a more reliable and punctual service, running on dedicated tracks that bypass road traffic.
Railways Announce Thousands of Special Trips
To manage the summer rush, which extends until mid-July, Indian Railways is operating over 18,000 special train trips across the country. These services, which run between April 15 and July 15, 2026, are specifically planned to connect major cities with regions that have a high student and migrant population. Zonal railways like Northern, Central, Western, and Southern have all notified extra services on high-demand corridors. These include trains with various classes, from affordable sleeper and general coaches to air-conditioned tiers, ensuring there are options for different budgets. The goal is to increase the availability of confirmed berths and provide a hassle-free travel experience.
How to Find and Book These Special Trains
Finding these special services is easier than you might think. The first step is to check the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) or the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. Special trains are typically identified by a 5-digit number that starts with '0'. You can also find announcements on the official websites of zonal railways and through the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app.
When booking, it’s important to be prepared. Create an IRCTC account beforehand and consider using the 'Master List' feature to save passenger details, which speeds up the process. Bookings for these trains often open on shorter notice than regular trains, so it pays to check for announcements frequently. While some special trains might have slightly higher 'special charges', the cost is often still competitive when compared to last-minute bus fares.
Tips for a Smooth Journey
Once you have your ticket, a little planning can go a long way. If you have a waitlisted ticket, track your PNR status regularly using the IRCTC website or by sending an SMS to 139. Pack reasonably, as luggage space can still be a consideration. At the station, be mindful of crowd management measures that may be in place at major terminals to ensure orderly boarding. Finally, always double-check your train number, platform, and departure time to avoid any last-minute confusion. Planning ahead allows you to start your break or return to your studies on a positive and relaxed note.
