The Magic of the Post-Monsoon Season
Autumn, particularly from October to November, is a magical time in the Andamans. As the monsoon recedes, it leaves behind a rejuvenated landscape, lush and intensely green. The weather becomes pleasant, with temperatures hovering between 23°C and 31°C,
and the skies clear up for sunny days. This period marks the beginning of the tourist season, but the crowds are yet to arrive in full force, giving you a more peaceful and intimate experience. The sea calms down, and water visibility improves significantly, creating ideal conditions for all underwater activities. It’s a sweet spot of great weather, fewer people, and often, more budget-friendly prices on stays and activities.
Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep): Adventure and Beauty
Havelock Island, officially Swaraj Dweep, is the vibrant heart of Andaman's tourism and for good reason. Its most famous attraction, Radhanagar Beach, is often hailed as one of Asia's best beaches, with its vast expanse of white sand and calm turquoise waters perfect for swimming. For adventure seekers, Elephant Beach is the go-to spot. Accessible by a short boat ride or a forest trek, it's a hub for water sports like snorkelling, sea walking, and jet skiing. Autumn's clear waters make snorkelling here especially rewarding, with colourful coral reefs teeming with life just metres from the shore. The island also offers jungle treks and beautiful sunrise views at Kalapathar Beach, known for the striking black rocks that line its coast.
Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep): A Tranquil Escape
If Havelock is the hub of activity, Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) is its serene, laid-back counterpart. Life moves at a slower pace here, making it perfect for those looking to unwind. The island is small enough to be explored on a bicycle, with flat roads winding through paddy fields and sleepy villages. Its main beaches are Bharatpur, Laxmanpur, and Sitapur. Bharatpur Beach is the activity centre, known for its shallow, clear waters ideal for glass-bottom boat rides and snorkelling. Laxmanpur Beach is famed for its spectacular sunsets and the nearby Natural Bridge, a unique rock formation best visited during low tide. For early risers, Sitapur Beach offers a dramatic sunrise view to start the day.
Diving into the Blue: Scuba and Snorkelling
The Andamans are one of India's premier scuba diving destinations, and the post-monsoon season is when the underwater world truly comes alive. From October onwards, the sea becomes calm and visibility improves dramatically, often exceeding 20-30 metres on good days. Both Havelock and Neil Island offer numerous dive sites suitable for everyone, from beginners to certified divers. Beginners can take a discovery scuba dive at sites like Nemo Reef in Havelock or the calm waters of Bharatpur Beach in Neil, where no swimming skills are required. The rejuvenated coral reefs are vibrant after the rains, and you can expect to see a rich diversity of marine life, including colourful reef fish, sea turtles, stingrays, and more.
Practical Tips for Your Autumn Trip
Island hopping between Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil is a core part of the Andaman experience. Private catamaran services like Makruzz and Green Ocean operate daily, offering comfortable and relatively fast connections. The journey from Havelock to Neil is a short one, typically taking about an hour. While there is no direct private ferry from Port Blair to Neil Island, you can easily travel via Havelock. It's wise to book your ferries in advance, especially as November approaches and tourist numbers begin to rise. While the heavy monsoon rains are over, occasional light showers can still occur in October, so packing a light raincoat or umbrella is a good idea. A minimum of 5 to 7 days is recommended to comfortably explore these islands and enjoy the activities they offer without feeling rushed.
