The New 30-Day Rule Explained

of 30 days. This change is part of a broader overhaul of Thailand's visa framework, which aims to standardize rules for visitors from nearly 60 countries. The new rules will officially come into effect 15 days after they are published in the Royal Gazette. Travellers who enter Thailand before the new rules are active will still be allowed to stay for the duration granted upon their arrival.
A Reversal After Tourist Decline
This decision follows a period of uncertainty that caused concern among travellers and the tourism industry. Earlier this year, the Thai government had approved a proposal to end the 60-day visa exemption and shift Indian visitors back to a visa-on-arrival system. Although the proposal was never implemented, the announcement alone created confusion and led to a noticeable decline in tourist arrivals from India, which is one of Thailand's largest tourism markets after China and Malaysia. According to Thailand's Tourism and Sports Ministry, the uncertainty caused a drop of nearly 20% in Indian tourist numbers. The latest decision to retain visa-free entry, even with a shorter stay, is seen as a move to reassure Indian travellers and support the country's vital tourism sector.
Why Was the Change Made?
Thai authorities have stated that the visa policy revisions are intended to strike a balance between promoting tourism and strengthening national security. The previous, more generous 60-day visa-free scheme, which was available to 93 countries, was reportedly being misused by some foreign nationals for purposes other than tourism, such as illegal work. By standardizing the visa-free stay to 30 days for a revised list of countries, the government aims to prevent abuse of the system while still facilitating genuine tourism. According to Thailand's Tourism Minister, Surasak Phancharoenworakul, a 30-day stay aligns well with the typical travel patterns of Indian tourists, who on average stay for about 7.2 days.

A 30-day stay is more than sufficient for most leisure and business trips. The great news is that the convenience of visa-free travel remains, saving both time and money. However, for those who were planning 'workations' or extended backpacking trips lasting more than a month, this new rule requires a change of plans. You will now need to apply for a different type of visa in advance to accommodate a longer stay.
