Why Your Morning Needs a Protein Kick
Starting your day with a protein-rich meal is one of the most effective ways to manage energy and hunger. Unlike carbohydrate-heavy breakfasts that can lead to a mid-morning slump, protein digests slowly. This gradual process helps stabilize blood sugar
levels, providing you with sustained energy that lasts for hours. It also increases the levels of hormones that signal fullness, which can reduce cravings and prevent unhealthy snacking before lunch. For those who are active, a protein-packed breakfast aids in muscle repair and growth, making it an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.
The Nutritional Power Trio
This recipe's strength lies in its three core components: paneer, oats, and sprouts. Paneer, or Indian cottage cheese, is a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids. It's also an excellent source of calcium and phosphorus, which are vital for bone health. Oats are celebrated for their high content of beta-glucan, a soluble fibre that helps manage cholesterol, promotes gut health, and ensures you feel full for longer. Sprouts are nutritional powerhouses, packed with vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that become more available through the sprouting process. They are low in calories but high in protein and fibre, supporting digestion and boosting energy levels.
The Oats Chilla and Paneer Bhurji Recipe
This two-part recipe combines a savoury pancake with a flavourful filling. By blending crumbled paneer directly into an oats-based batter, you get a chilla that is high in both protein and fibre. For the Chilla Batter: 1 cup rolled oats, ground into a flour 1/2 cup besan (gram flour) 1/2 cup grated paneer 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 green chilli, finely chopped 1/4 tsp turmeric powder Salt to taste Water to form a thick, pourable batter For the Paneer Bhurji Filling: 100g paneer, crumbled 1 small tomato, chopped 1/2 capsicum, chopped (optional) 1/2 tsp cumin seeds A pinch of turmeric powder Salt and pepper to taste 1 tsp oil or ghee Fresh coriander, chopped Instructions: 1. First, prepare the bhurji filling. Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add the onion and sauté until translucent. Add tomato and capsicum and cook for a few minutes. 2. Add the spices, salt, and crumbled paneer. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes. Garnish with fresh coriander and set aside. 3. For the chilla, mix the ground oats, besan, grated paneer, onion, chilli, turmeric, and salt in a bowl. Gradually add water, whisking to form a smooth batter without lumps. Let it rest for 10 minutes. 4. Heat a non-stick tawa or pan and lightly grease it. Pour a ladleful of batter and spread it into a circle. Drizzle a little oil around the edges. 5. Cook on medium heat for 2-3 minutes, or until the top looks cooked and the edges start to lift. Flip the chilla and cook for another 2 minutes until golden brown. 6. Spread a portion of the paneer bhurji filling onto one half of the chilla and fold it over. Serve hot.
Quick Sprouts Salad on the Side
To complete this nutritious meal, a simple sprouts salad adds extra crunch, fibre, and vitamins. The best time to consume sprouts is in the morning, as it aids in digestion and nutrient absorption for the rest of the day. Ingredients: 1 cup mixed sprouts (like moong, chickpea, or lentil) 1/4 cup chopped cucumber 1/4 cup chopped tomato A squeeze of lemon juice * A pinch of black salt and chaat masala Instructions: Simply combine all the ingredients in a bowl and mix well. The salad can be prepared in minutes while your chilla is cooking. The high fibre content will further aid digestion and promote a healthy gut.
Tips for Even Faster Mornings
To make this breakfast even quicker on busy weekdays, a little preparation goes a long way. The paneer bhurji filling can be made the night before and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. You can also pre-mix the dry ingredients for the chilla batter (ground oats, besan, and spices) and store them in a jar. In the morning, you just need to add water and the fresh ingredients. The sprouts, once ready, can also be stored in the fridge for a couple of days, making the salad assembly an effortless task.
