The Train And The Route
Southern Railway has introduced an Executive Vistadome AC coach on the Madurai-Guruvayur Express (Train No. 16327/16328). This marks the first time a train operating through Kerala will feature this special coach, designed to boost tourism by offering
passengers an immersive travel experience. The train journey connects two of South India's major pilgrimage centres, Madurai in Tamil Nadu and Guruvayur in Kerala. While the entire route has its charm, the main attraction is the highly scenic Sengottai-Punalur ghat section, which winds through the verdant Western Ghats. This particular stretch is renowned for its lush landscapes, misty hills, and dramatic curves.
The Vistadome Coach Experience
So, what exactly is a Vistadome coach? It is a specially designed air-conditioned carriage built for sightseeing. It features oversized glass windows that offer wide-angle views, and a see-through glass roof, allowing for a truly panoramic perspective of the surroundings. The seats are a key feature; they can rotate, allowing you to face the direction of the best scenery, and also recline for comfort. This design ensures you don’t miss a moment of the natural beauty outside. With just 44 executive seats, the coach provides a premium and spacious feel. Additional amenities often include Wi-Fi, an observation lounge, and sliding doors, making the journey comfortable and modern.
Spectacular Scenery And Highlights
The highlight of this journey is undoubtedly the passage through the Aryankavu Pass on the Sengottai-Punalur line. This section of the Western Ghats is famous for its dense forests, tunnels, and historic bridges. The train navigates sharp curves and steep gradients, offering the thrill of a mountain railway journey. The most iconic landmark on this route is the 'Pathimoonu Kannara Palam' or the 13 Arch Bridge. This magnificent, century-old bridge, built with stone and limestone, is an architectural marvel that stands tall over the river and valley below, providing a stunning photo opportunity for passengers. As the train crosses from Tamil Nadu into Kerala, you'll witness a beautiful transition in landscapes, from drier plains to the lush, tropical greenery that Kerala is famous for.

How To Book And Essential Tips
Booking for this popular service is open via the IRCTC website or reservation counters. When booking online, be sure to select the 'Executive Vistadome (EV)' class to secure a seat in the panoramic coach. Due to extremely high demand, it is highly recommended to book your tickets well in advance, as seats for the initial runs sold out almost immediately. The train (16327) departs Madurai at 11:35 AM and reaches Guruvayur at 2:15 AM the next day. The most scenic part of the journey, the ghat section, is best experienced during daylight hours, so check the timings for that leg of the trip when planning.
