The Landmark USBRL Project
The journey is made possible by the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), one of India's most ambitious and challenging railway projects. This 272-km line carves through the formidable Himalayas, featuring dozens of tunnels and hundreds of bridges
to connect Jammu with the Kashmir Valley by an all-weather route. The completion of this link, which was officially announced in early 2026, marks a historic milestone in Indian infrastructure, promising to boost tourism and the local economy significantly. The crown jewel of this project is the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, standing 359 metres above the riverbed.
Vande Bharat: Route, Timings, and Services
The Vande Bharat Express now provides a direct link between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar. Initial services began between Katra and Srinagar in June 2025 and were extended to Jammu Tawi on April 30, 2026, creating a direct connection between the region's two major cities. The journey covers approximately 269 kilometres in about 4 hours and 45 minutes, a significant improvement over the 8-11 hours often required by road. Train 26401 departs from Jammu Tawi around 6:20 AM, reaching Srinagar by 11:10 AM. The service runs six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. Due to high demand, Indian Railways is already operating two Vande Bharat trains on this route and has approved a third service to increase capacity.
How to Book Your Journey
Booking a ticket on the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat is straightforward. Tickets can be booked online through the official IRCTC website or mobile app. Given the route's popularity, it is highly advisable to book your tickets well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons. Fares for the Chair Car begin at around ₹715, while the Executive Chair Car costs approximately ₹1,320, though prices can vary. When booking, search for trains from Jammu Tawi (JAT) to Srinagar (SINA). The primary stops on this scenic route include Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan Udhampur, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal.
The Onboard Experience
The Vande Bharat Express is known for its modern amenities and comfort. The trains on this route are specially equipped with 'Winterization' technology, featuring heated interiors and anti-frost windshields to operate reliably even in temperatures as low as -20°C. Passengers can enjoy panoramic views from large windows as the train traverses the stunning Himalayan landscape, crossing iconic bridges like the Chenab and Anji Khad. Onboard catering, reclining seats, and a smooth, fast journey make it a far more relaxing alternative to the winding and often congested NH-44 highway.
Arriving in Srinagar: What Next?
Upon arrival at Srinagar Railway Station, you have several options for local transport. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are readily available to take you to your hotel or houseboat. For a truly authentic experience, many travellers opt to stay on a houseboat on Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake. Srinagar is a city of enchanting sights. Plan to visit the iconic Mughal Gardens—Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi. A shikara ride on Dal Lake is an unmissable experience, offering serene views and a glimpse into local life. Other key attractions include the Shankaracharya Temple, which offers a panoramic view of the city, and the historic Hazratbal Shrine.
Best Time to Travel
Srinagar’s beauty changes with the seasons, making it a year-round destination.
