The Hidden Risk of Convenience
UPI Autopay, a feature from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), lets you authorize recurring payments for everything from OTT subscriptions and mobile bills to insurance premiums. You approve a mandate once with your UPI PIN, and future
debits happen automatically. The problem is, it's easy to forget what you've approved. A free trial that converts to a paid subscription, a service you no longer use, or a duplicate mandate can all lead to small, unnoticed debits that add up. This phenomenon, often called 'subscription creep', is a common pitfall in digital finance. Many users don't notice a small monthly deduction buried in a long list of other UPI transactions.
Why a Mandate Audit is Non-Negotiable
Think of it as a financial health check-up. Regularly reviewing your active mandates helps you spot and cancel 'zombie subscriptions' for services you've forgotten about. This prevents unwanted charges, helps you avoid penalties for insufficient funds if a surprise debit occurs, and gives you a clear picture of your fixed monthly outgoings. Without this audit, you risk letting money leak from your account every month, undermining your budget and savings goals. The responsibility for managing these mandates rests with you; simply deleting an app does not cancel the underlying instruction, which lives with your bank and the NPCI system.
How to Find All Your Active Mandates
Finding your active mandates can feel like a treasure hunt, as some UPI apps may only show mandates created within that specific app. For a complete picture, you should check every UPI app you use, such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm, as well as your bank's mobile app. Typically, you can find your mandates in a section labeled 'Autopay', 'My Mandates', or 'Recurring Payments'. For an even more comprehensive view, the NPCI has a central portal (upihelp.npci.org.in) where you can log in with your mobile number to see all mandates linked to your accounts, regardless of which app you used to create them.
A Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Up
Once you've located your list of active mandates, the clean-up is straightforward. Go through the list and identify any services you no longer need or recognize. For each unwanted mandate, there will be an option to 'Cancel', 'Revoke', or 'Remove'. Selecting this option and authenticating with your UPI PIN will terminate the instruction. For example, in Google Pay, you would go to your Profile, tap 'Autopay', select the mandate, and choose 'Cancel autopay'. In PhonePe, you find 'AutoPay' under your profile's 'Payment Settings', select the mandate, and tap 'Remove AutoPay'. Always check that the status changes to 'Cancelled' or 'Revoked' to ensure no further debits occur.
Best Practices for Safe Autopay Use
To keep your finances secure going forward, adopt a few simple habits. First, schedule a 10-minute mandate review on your calendar every month. Second, before approving any new mandate, carefully read the details, including the amount, debit frequency, and merchant name. Avoid approving requests from unknown sources. For highly variable bills like electricity or credit cards, you might prefer manual payments over Autopay to avoid 'bill shock'. Finally, always enable SMS and in-app notifications. RBI guidelines mandate that you receive a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before each payment, which acts as a final checkpoint.
