What 'Affordable' Really Means
While Japan announced a major global visa fee hike effective July 1, 2026, it has been confirmed that Indian passport holders are exempt from this increase. The visa fee for Indians remains just ₹500 for both single and multiple-entry tourist visas. When
you apply, you will also pay a mandatory service charge to the visa application centre, VFS Global, which is approximately ₹800. This brings the total essential cost to around ₹1,300 per person. This is a fraction of the cost for other popular destinations. For comparison, a US tourist visa fee is approximately $185 (around ₹15,000), and a Schengen visa for Europe is €90 (over ₹8,000), not including their respective service charges.
Your Document Checklist
The paperwork for a Japan visa is methodical but manageable. You don’t need to be a documentation expert, but you do need to be meticulous. The core requirements for a standard tourist visa application include a valid passport with at least six months of validity and two blank pages, a completed visa application form, and a recent passport-sized photograph with a white background. You will also need to provide proof of your travel plans, which includes a day-by-day itinerary, confirmed return flight tickets, and proof of accommodation for your stay in Japan.
Proving Financial Stability
Japan wants to see that you can support yourself during your trip. To prove this, you will need to submit financial documents. This typically includes your last three to six months of personal bank statements, showing sufficient funds, and your Income Tax Returns (ITR) for the last three years. If you are employed, you will also need to provide your last three months' salary slips and a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) or leave letter from your employer. These documents together create a picture of a stable applicant who intends to return to India after their trip.
The Application Process, Step-by-Step
The process for Indian citizens is handled exclusively through VFS Global centres. First, you need to gather all the documents as per the checklist provided on the VFS Global website. Fill out the visa application form accurately. Once your file is complete, you book an appointment at your nearest VFS centre to submit your documents and pay the fees. The embassy advises applying up to three months before your planned travel date. After submission, you can track the status of your application online. The typical processing time is around five to six working days, but it is always wise to apply well in advance.
Tips for a Smooth Experience
To ensure your application goes through without a hitch, double and triple-check your documents against the latest checklist. Ensure all photocopies are clear and on A4-sized paper. When creating your itinerary, be detailed and realistic; it should match your flight and hotel bookings. A well-written cover letter explaining the purpose of your visit can also strengthen your application. Since April 2024, Japan has also introduced an eVISA system for Indian residents, which is processed through VFS but results in a digital visa, meaning you don't have to submit your passport. Check the VFS Global website to see if this option suits your travel plans.
