A New Chapter in Connectivity
The Railway Board has officially approved the launch of the Surat-Udaipur Vande Bharat Express, marking a significant milestone for both cities. This is Surat's first Vande Bharat service and Gujarat's sixth premium train, a move celebrated by officials
and travellers alike. Expected to commence operations before the Navratri festival, the service aims to cater to the festive travel rush and will run six days a week, excluding Tuesdays. The introduction of this route effectively extends the premium connectivity that was previously available only up to Asarva (Ahmedabad), now bringing it all the way to South Gujarat.
Route, Timings, and Stoppages
The journey between the Diamond City and the City of Lakes will take approximately seven hours and 30 minutes, a significant reduction from the 9-10 hours it typically takes by road. The eight-coach train, numbered 26903/26904, will offer a convenient schedule for both business and leisure travellers. Train 26903 will depart from Surat at 6:10 AM and arrive in Udaipur at 1:40 PM. For the return leg, train 26904 will leave Udaipur at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. The route includes nine commercial stops at key locations: Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar, enhancing connectivity across the region.
A Major Boost for Tourism
This new train is poised to be a game-changer for tourism, making it easier than ever for residents of South Gujarat to plan a trip to Udaipur, renowned for its picturesque lakes, grand palaces, and vibrant culture. The comfortable, high-speed journey transforms a long-haul trip into a manageable weekend getaway. The direct link is expected to drive tourist footfall, which in turn can stimulate local economies by boosting businesses like hotels, restaurants, and handicraft markets in the Mewar region. By connecting two major hubs, the train encourages cultural exchange and makes exploring the heritage of both Gujarat and Rajasthan more accessible.
Connecting Commerce and Trade
Beyond tourism, the Surat-Udaipur Vande Bharat Express offers substantial benefits for trade and commerce. Surat, a dominant centre for textiles and diamonds, will gain a faster, more reliable logistics and travel link to markets in Rajasthan. Conversely, industries in and around Udaipur, such as mining and marbles, will benefit from quicker access to the commercial hub and ports of Gujarat. This improved connectivity can streamline supply chains, reduce transit times for business travellers, and foster stronger economic ties between the two states, creating new opportunities for growth and collaboration.
The Modern Vande Bharat Experience
For those new to the Vande Bharat experience, the train offers a significant upgrade in passenger comfort and amenities. The fully air-conditioned coaches come in two classes: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC), with the latter featuring 360-degree rotating seats. Passengers can expect large windows for panoramic views, onboard Wi-Fi for connectivity, a GPS-based passenger information system, and mobile charging sockets at every seat. The train is also equipped with modern safety features like the KAVACH anti-collision system, automatic doors, and CCTV surveillance, ensuring a safe and pleasant journey.
