The New Route and Stoppages
The latest Vande Bharat service will connect Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, notably adding a stoppage at Udhampur's Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan station. This addition addresses a long-standing demand from the local population and improves connectivity for
the entire region. The train operates on the landmark Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a marvel of engineering that cuts through the challenging Himalayan terrain. Existing services already stop at key stations like Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal. The introduction of a third train aims to increase passenger capacity on this high-demand corridor, which has seen full occupancy since its launch.
Journey Time and Schedule
One of the biggest advantages is the drastic reduction in travel time. The Vande Bharat Express covers the approximately 269-kilometre distance between Jammu and Srinagar in under five hours. This is a significant improvement over the 7-10 hours often required by road, which is subject to traffic and weather disruptions. Currently, two pairs of Vande Bharat trains are already operational. For example, one train (26401) leaves Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM to reach Srinagar at 11:10 AM, while its return service (26402) departs Srinagar at 2:00 PM, arriving in Jammu at 6:50 PM. These services typically run six days a week, with different pairs having their off-days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays respectively. The new service (26407/26408) will add more options for travellers.
Tickets: Pricing and How to Book
Tickets for the Vande Bharat Express can be booked through the official IRCTC website or the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. Passengers can choose between two classes: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC). Prices are dynamic, but for context, fares for the existing Jammu-Srinagar route in Chair Car have been noted to be around ₹715, with Executive Chair Car tickets costing approximately ₹1,320, inclusive of catering. To book, simply log in to the IRCTC platform, enter your origin (Jammu Tawi - JAT) and destination (Srinagar - SINA), select your travel date, and choose the Vande Bharat service. Given the high demand, it is advisable to book tickets well in advance.
The Onboard Experience
The Vande Bharat trains are designed for comfort and speed, offering a premium travel experience. The trains running on this route are specially winter-ready, equipped with advanced heating systems to handle the region's cold climate. Passengers can enjoy modern amenities such as reclining seats, Wi-Fi, GPS-based passenger information systems, and onboard catering. The journey itself is a major attraction, offering breathtaking panoramic views as the train traverses the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge. The train's speed has also been recently increased to a maximum of 100 kmph on the Katra-Banihal section, further reducing travel time and ensuring a faster, safer journey.
A Boost for Tourism and Connectivity
This enhanced rail link is more than just a convenience; it's a transformative development for Jammu and Kashmir. By providing a reliable, all-weather travel option, the Vande Bharat service is expected to significantly boost tourism, including pilgrimage to destinations like Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. The previous dependency on the often-unreliable Jammu-Srinagar National Highway meant that the valley could be cut off during bad weather. This train service provides predictability and stability for residents, military personnel, and tourists alike, integrating the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India's rail network more seamlessly than ever before.
