The Ministry of Railways has officially approved the introduction of the Surat-Udaipur City Vande Bharat Express, a move celebrated as a significant infrastructure boost for Western India. The service provides Surat with its first originating Vande Bharat train,
directly connecting the bustling commercial and textile hub with one of India's most popular tourist destinations. This much-awaited train is expected to slash travel time compared to road transport and provide a comfortable, premium alternative for passengers traveling between South Gujarat and Southern Rajasthan. The service is anticipated to launch before the Navratri festive season begins in October 2026, catering to the holiday travel rush.
Official Route and Key Stoppages
The train will operate under numbers 26903 from Surat to Udaipur and 26904 for the return journey. Covering a distance of approximately 690 kilometres, the route has been designed to connect several important commercial and cultural towns. During its journey, the train will make nine commercial stops, ensuring comprehensive connectivity. The official halts between Surat and Udaipur City are: Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar. This extensive list of stops bridges key economic zones in Gujarat with important towns in Rajasthan.
Timings and Weekly Schedule
The Surat-Udaipur Vande Bharat Express will run six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. The schedule is designed to suit both business travellers and tourists. Train number 26903 will depart from Surat at 6:10 AM and is scheduled to arrive at Udaipur City at 1:40 PM the same day. For the return leg, train number 26904 will depart from Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. This schedule allows for a full day of activities in Udaipur before the evening departure or an early start from Surat to maximize time in the destination city. The total journey is expected to take around seven hours and 30 minutes.
Coach Composition and Onboard Experience
This Vande Bharat service will operate with an eight-coach configuration, typical for routes with its passenger profile. Like other Vande Bharat trains, it will offer two classes of travel: AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car. Passengers can expect modern amenities, including reclining seats, large windows for scenic viewing, on-board Wi-Fi for infotainment, and GPS-based passenger information systems. The train is designed for a maximum operational speed of 160 kmph, though actual speeds will depend on track conditions along the route. Primary maintenance for the rake will be carried out at Surat.
An Important Service Update
The introduction of the new Surat-Udaipur service comes with a significant change for an existing route. The Railway Board has approved the discontinuation of the Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat Express (train numbers 26963/26964). This service, which was launched in February 2026, will now be effectively extended and upgraded to run all the way to Surat. This move consolidates services and extends the premium Vande Bharat connectivity from Udaipur deeper into Gujarat, linking it directly to major cities like Vadodara and Surat.
Expected Fares and How to Book
While Indian Railways has not yet announced the official fare structure, estimates based on similar Vande Bharat services suggest what passengers might expect to pay. Reports indicate that a ticket for the AC Chair Car could cost between ₹1,400 and ₹1,800, while the Executive Chair Car fare may range from ₹2,600 to ₹3,200. These prices are subject to change based on final calculations, dynamic pricing, and whether catering services are included. Bookings for the new train will open on the IRCTC website and mobile app closer to the official launch date. Travellers are advised to watch for the train numbers 26903 and 26904 to appear in the reservation system.
