The Science Behind Monsoon Dampness
The primary reason your home feels different during the monsoon is the dramatic increase in humidity, which is the amount of water vapour in the air. When this humid air enters your cooler home, the moisture condenses on surfaces like walls, windows,
and furniture. This process, combined with reduced natural ventilation because we keep windows shut to keep the rain out, traps moisture indoors. Porous materials like wood, drywall, and fabrics are particularly good at absorbing this ambient moisture, which is why furniture can feel damp and clothes take forever to dry.
Uncovering the Source of Musty Odours
That distinct musty smell is more than just an unpleasant odour; it’s a sign of microbial growth. High humidity creates the perfect breeding ground for mould and mildew, fungi that thrive in damp, poorly ventilated environments. These microorganisms release gases known as microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs), which are responsible for the tell-tale musty scent. You'll often find this issue is most prominent in enclosed spaces with little airflow, such as wardrobes, bathrooms, and basements. The smell is a clear indicator that you need to address the underlying moisture problem.
Why Excess Moisture Is a Health Concern
Beyond the structural damage mould can cause by eating away at materials like wood and drywall, it also poses health risks. Mould releases tiny spores into the air that, when inhaled, can trigger allergic reactions, asthma attacks, coughing, and other respiratory issues. People with existing allergies or compromised immune systems are particularly vulnerable. Furthermore, humid conditions are also ideal for dust mites, another common allergen that can exacerbate respiratory problems. Controlling indoor humidity is therefore crucial for maintaining a healthy living environment.
Improve Ventilation, Even When It Rains
Improving airflow is your first line of defence. While you can't leave windows wide open during a downpour, you can strategically ventilate. Open windows and doors for at least 15-30 minutes during dry spells to create cross-ventilation and push stale, moist air out. Use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms during and after use to expel humid air directly outside. Even running ceiling fans can help circulate air and prevent moisture from settling on surfaces. The goal is to keep the air moving, which discourages the damp, stagnant conditions that mould loves.
Actively Remove Moisture From the Air
When ventilation isn't enough, you need to actively remove excess moisture. A dehumidifier is the most effective tool for this, as it pulls water directly from the air and collects it in a tank. For most Indian homes, especially in humid coastal cities or during peak monsoon, a dehumidifier can make a significant difference in comfort and mould prevention. For a low-cost, natural alternative, place bowls of rock salt, baking soda, or activated charcoal in damp corners, cupboards, and rooms. These materials are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb moisture from their immediate surroundings.
Keeping Wardrobes and Fabrics Fresh
Clothes and linens are magnets for moisture and odours. Avoid storing damp or even slightly wet clothes in your wardrobe, as this creates a perfect microclimate for fungus. Ensure everything is completely dry before putting it away. Consider using moisture-absorbing products like silica gel packets or commercially available absorbers inside closets. Airing out your cupboards regularly and placing natural deodorisers like camphor or neem leaves can also help protect your clothes and prevent that locked-in musty smell.
