The Search for Realness
For today’s young travellers, authenticity trumps prestige. The generation is moving away from crowded, pre-packaged tourist trails in favour of genuine connection. A recent Airbnb report found that 95% of Indian Gen Z travellers want their trips to feel
personal and unique, not typical or pre-planned. This translates to choosing rustic homestays over five-star hotels and seeking experiences that are rooted in the local economy and culture. They are less interested in seeing the sights and more interested in feeling the place, whether that means sharing a meal in a village kitchen or learning a local craft. This desire for realness is a quiet rebellion against the curated perfection often seen online, with 90% actively seeking places that haven't gone viral.
Smarter Budgets, More Trips
Economic pragmatism plays a huge role in this trend. Instead of saving up for one expensive international holiday, many are opting for several shorter, more affordable domestic trips. Data shows that seven in ten Gen Z travellers would rather take three short trips than one long annual vacation. This high-frequency travel habit is made possible by the relative affordability of exploring India. A weekend trip to a nearby hill station or coastal town is far more accessible than a European tour, allowing for more frequent escapes from routine and burnout. This generation has mastered the art of budget travel, with a significant number making financial sacrifices in their daily lives, like cutting back on shopping, to fund their next adventure. For many, domestic travel simply offers better value and more opportunities to explore.
The New Social Currency
While social media once glorified pictures in front of the Eiffel Tower, the new digital currency is uniqueness. Instagram and YouTube are now filled with reels of remote waterfalls in Meghalaya or tranquil moments in a Wayanad homestay. This content sparks a desire for experiences that feel personal and undiscovered. Travel has become a form of self-expression for Gen Z, with 87% stating that how they travel reflects who they are as a person. Posting about a trip to a little-known village or a challenging local trek has become a more powerful statement than a generic selfie at a global landmark. It signals a deeper engagement with the world and a curiosity that goes beyond the obvious. However, they are also wary of superficial content, trusting peer reviews and genuine stories over polished influencer posts.
Conscious and Connected Travel
There’s a growing awareness of the impact of travel. Many young Indians are consciously choosing to support local communities and minimise their environmental footprint. This means preferring homestays that support local families, hiring community guides, and buying handmade goods. This mindset extends to how they travel, with a noticeable surge in bus and train bookings, which are often more sustainable options. But the search for connection isn't just about sustainability; it's also about personal roots and well-being. A surprising trend is the rise of spiritual tourism among the youth, with destinations like Rishikesh and Ujjain seeing a major influx of young visitors. For a generation that is perpetually online, these trips offer a chance to disconnect, reflect, and find a sense of peace.
The Ease of Spontaneity
The days of planning a trip months in advance are fading. For Gen Z, travel is often a spontaneous decision—a response to a long weekend, a stressful week at work, or a simple 'let's go' from a friend. Technology facilitates this impulsiveness. With booking apps, digital payment systems, and AI-powered planning tools, organising a last-minute domestic trip is easier than ever. In fact, two-thirds of this generation book their travel within just days or weeks of their departure date. This shift towards shorter, more frequent, and unplanned trips has made domestic destinations the default choice. The sheer convenience of hopping on a bus or a short flight to explore a new part of the country perfectly aligns with their desire for flexible and accessible adventures.
