Fortify Your Entryway
The battle against monsoon muck is won or lost at your front door. This is your home's first line of defence. Start by placing a highly absorbent doormat outside to catch the worst of the mud and water. Inside, add a second mat, preferably a washable
one, to trap any remaining dirt. Designate this area as a 'paw-wiping station'. Keep a stack of old, absorbent microfiber towels handy, along with a bottle of pet-safe paw cleaner or simply a bowl of water. Make it a non-negotiable routine to wipe and dry your pet’s paws and coat thoroughly before they are allowed further into the house. A stylish umbrella stand and a waterproof shoe rack complete the setup, ensuring all wet items are quarantined in one easy-to-clean zone.
Choose Floors That Forgive
Carpets and the rainy season are not friends, especially with a pet in the house. Wall-to-wall carpeting can trap moisture, leading to mould, mildew, and lingering damp smells. The best flooring options are waterproof and easy to clean. Vitrified or ceramic tiles with a matte finish are an excellent choice for Indian homes; they are durable, scratch-resistant, and can be mopped clean in minutes. Luxury vinyl flooring (LVT) is another fantastic, pet-proof option that often mimics the look of wood but is 100% waterproof and provides better grip for paws than overly smooth tiles. If you can't replace your flooring, invest in lightweight, washable cotton dhurries or outdoor rugs in darker colours or busy patterns that can hide minor stains between washes.
Rethink Your Fabrics and Furnishings
Delicate fabrics like silk or materials with loose weaves like bouclé are a magnet for pet hair and are difficult to clean when damp or dirty. This monsoon, opt for smarter, pet-friendly fabrics. Materials like microfiber, canvas, denim, and leather or faux leather are durable and easy to wipe clean. Performance fabrics, often used for outdoor furniture, are designed to be stain- and water-resistant, making them an ideal choice for sofas and chairs. If you don't want to reupholster, use washable slipcovers or throws in vibrant colours to protect your furniture and add a pop of brightness to combat the grey weather. It's also wise to slightly elevate wooden furniture off the floor on small stands to protect it from dampness seeping from the floors.
Combat Dampness and Odours
High humidity often leads to a persistent musty smell, which can be amplified in a home with pets. Good ventilation is key. Open windows and doors whenever the rain subsides to allow fresh air to circulate. Use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms to pull damp air out. A dehumidifier can be a great investment for maintaining optimal indoor humidity levels. To keep your home smelling fresh, use pet-safe options like scented candles with natural fragrances like citrus, sandalwood, or lavender. Regularly washing all pet bedding is crucial, as damp beds are a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. Adding air-purifying, pet-safe plants like areca palms and snake plants can also help improve indoor air quality naturally.
Create Cosy and Safe Indoor Zones
With walks and outdoor playtime often cut short, your pet will be spending a lot more time indoors. It's important to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. Create a cosy den for them with their favourite blankets and toys. Ensure their bed is in a dry, draft-free corner, perhaps slightly elevated to keep it away from cold floors. To prevent boredom from turning into destructive behaviour, have a stock of indoor toys like puzzle feeders, rope toys, and chew toys. This not only keeps them engaged but also helps you protect your furniture and other belongings from becoming an object of their pent-up energy.
