As festive travel peaks across India, a significant change is set to make journeys safer for millions. Indian Railways is extending its optional travel insurance scheme to passengers buying tickets at physical counters, closing a long-standing gap.
A Major Change at the Ticket Counter
In
a move aimed at enhancing passenger safety and parity, Indian Railways will offer optional travel insurance to those purchasing tickets from Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. This service, previously available almost exclusively to those booking online via the IRCTC website or app, will now be accessible to everyone, including those in rural or semi-urban areas who rely on traditional ticketing methods. The change follows a directive from the Supreme Court, ensuring that all passengers have the same opportunity for financial protection, regardless of how they book their ticket. This initiative is particularly timely, launching just as millions prepare to travel for upcoming festivals.
How to Opt-In for Coverage
Starting from October 27, 2026, when you buy a ticket at a railway counter, you will have the choice to add travel insurance. While the exact process is being finalised by railway authorities, it is expected to be straightforward. Passengers will likely need to provide a valid mobile number during the booking process. This number will be used by the insurance company to send the policy details via SMS, along with a link to fill in nomination details online. It's crucial to provide accurate information to ensure the policy is issued correctly and to simplify any potential claim process later. Passengers should look for official announcements from the Railways for the final, detailed procedure.
Understanding the Insurance Benefits
The travel insurance scheme offers a significant safety net for a very nominal cost. For online bookings, the premium is currently just 45 paise per passenger. While the exact premium for counter tickets is yet to be confirmed, it is expected to be similarly affordable. The coverage is substantial, providing financial support in case of a train accident or other untoward incidents during the journey. The policy typically offers up to ₹10 lakh for death or permanent total disability. It also includes coverage for permanent partial disability and hospitalisation expenses for injuries sustained during travel. The insurance is provided by partner companies, and the policy becomes a direct contract between the passenger and the insurer.
Why This Is a Welcome Step
Extending insurance to counter tickets is a crucial step towards inclusive passenger welfare. It acknowledges that a large number of travellers in India still do not use digital platforms for booking tickets. Previously, these passengers were at a disadvantage, lacking access to the affordable insurance offered online. The Supreme Court's intervention, which prompted this change, came after a petition filed following the tragic train accident in Odisha in 2023, highlighting the need for universal safety nets. This move ensures that for a minimal cost, families can have financial protection against the unforeseen risks of travel, offering valuable peace of mind during the busy festive season.
Key Things to Remember
The insurance is applicable only to Indian citizens and is not available for foreign nationals. The coverage is valid for the duration of the train journey, from the point of departure to arrival, including the process of boarding and de-boarding the train. After purchasing the ticket and opting for insurance, it is vital to fill out the nominee details using the link sent by the insurance company. In the absence of a nominated person, any claim settlement would be paid to the legal heir, which can involve a more complex legal process. The scheme is not applicable for children under the age of five who travel without a booked berth.
