Plan Ahead and Book Early
This is the golden rule of festive travel. Indian Railways opens bookings 120 days in advance. If you know your travel dates, mark your calendar and be ready to book the moment the window opens, which is typically at 8:00 AM. For popular routes, tickets
in all classes can vanish within minutes. Setting a reminder a day before can make all the difference between a confirmed berth and a long waitlist.
Master the Art of Tatkal
For last-minute plans, the Tatkal and Premium Tatkal quotas are your best bet. Tatkal bookings open one day before the train's departure from its originating station. The window opens at 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes. Premium Tatkal follows the same timings but has dynamic pricing, meaning fares increase with demand. To succeed, you need to be fast. Save passenger details in your IRCTC profile's 'Master List' beforehand to auto-fill the information. Using a fast payment method like UPI or the IRCTC e-Wallet can also save precious seconds that often determine success or failure.
Keep an Eye on Special Trains
To manage the incredible demand, Indian Railways announces hundreds of 'Festive Special' trains every year. These services are temporary and are introduced on high-demand routes connecting major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to destinations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and other states. Announcements are usually made a few weeks before the festival period. Keep a close watch on the official IRCTC website, the NTES app, and press releases from zonal railways to know when these trains are announced and when their bookings will open. These trains, often starting with a '0' or '8', provide a significant number of extra berths.
Use the VIKALP Scheme for Waitlisted Tickets
Don't lose hope if you have a waitlisted ticket. Opt for the VIKALP scheme while booking. This scheme gives waitlisted passengers a chance to get a confirmed berth in an alternate train on the same route, departing within a similar time frame, at no extra cost. While it doesn't guarantee a confirmed seat, it significantly increases your chances by automatically considering you for any available seats on other eligible trains after the chart is prepared.
Consider Break-Journeys
Direct trains on popular routes fill up the fastest. If you can't find a direct train, look for break-journeys. This involves booking tickets on two separate, connecting trains. For example, instead of a direct train from Mumbai to Patna, you might find a train from Mumbai to a major junction like Prayagraj or Varanasi, and another from there to Patna. This requires more planning but can often be the key to securing a confirmed journey when direct options are exhausted.
Prepare for the Journey Itself
Once you have your ticket, the preparation isn't over. Stations will be extremely crowded. Arrive well in advance of your departure time. Pack light to make it easier to navigate platforms and crowded compartments. For safety, always keep your luggage locked and secured, preferably with a small chain. Be vigilant with your belongings, especially phones and wallets. Carrying essentials like hand sanitiser, a power bank, and some snacks can make your journey much more comfortable.
