Why Bank Account Validation is Non-Negotiable
The Income Tax Department has moved away from issuing physical cheques for refunds. Now, all refunds are credited directly to a taxpayer's bank account through an Electronic Clearing Service (ECS). To ensure the money reaches the correct person securely,
the department requires every taxpayer to pre-validate their bank account on the e-filing portal. This validation acts as a digital handshake, confirming that the bank account belongs to the same individual whose PAN is registered. Without a successfully validated account, your refund will be stuck, even if your Income Tax Return (ITR) has been processed and the refund has been approved.
Common Reasons for Validation Failure
Before you can fix the issue, it helps to know why it happened. A bank account validation can fail for several reasons, most of which are easy to correct. The most common culprits include a name mismatch, where the name on your PAN card does not exactly match the name registered with your bank account. Other frequent issues are an incorrect account number or IFSC code entered on the portal, a bank account that is closed, dormant, or inactive, or a bank account that is not linked with your PAN. If your bank has recently merged with another, the IFSC code may have changed, leading to a validation error.
Step-by-Step Guide to Re-Validate Your Account
Resolving a validation error is a straightforward process you can complete online. First, log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal using your user ID (PAN) and password. Navigate to your profile section and click on 'My Bank Account'. Here, you will see tabs for 'Added', 'Failed', and 'Removed' bank accounts. Go to the 'Failed Bank Accounts' tab to see the account that has an issue and the reason for the failure. Depending on the reason, you can either click 'Re-Validate' and correct the erroneous details like the IFSC code or account number, or you may need to remove the failed account and add a new one from scratch by clicking 'Add Bank Account'. When adding an account, carefully enter the account number, IFSC, and ensure the account type (e.g., Savings, Current) is correct. After submitting, the validation status will be updated, which can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days.
My Account is Validated. What Now?
Successfully validating your bank account is the first critical step, but it doesn't automatically trigger the release of your stuck refund. Once your account shows a 'Validated' status, you must ensure it is nominated to receive refunds. You can do this by toggling the 'Nominate for Refund' button next to the validated account details. After that, you need to submit a 'Refund Reissue Request'. To do this, go to the 'Services' menu on the portal dashboard and select 'Refund Reissue'. The system will show the assessment year for which the refund failed. Select it, choose your newly validated bank account, and proceed with e-verification using an Aadhaar OTP or another available method to submit the request.
Tips for a Smooth and Successful Process
To prevent future issues, always double-check your details before submitting. Ensure your PAN is linked to your bank account, which you can confirm with your bank branch. The name in your bank records should be identical to the name on your PAN card. It is also wise to use a primary bank account that you actively manage to avoid problems with dormant or inactive accounts. When you add an account, the portal automatically populates the bank name and branch based on the IFSC code, which serves as a good cross-check. Keeping your mobile number and email ID updated on both the e-filing portal and with your bank ensures you receive all communications and can complete OTP-based verifications smoothly.
