Before You Click 'Book'
Your diligence starts the moment you begin your search. Whether you're on a direct hotel website or an online travel aggregator (OTA), the language used can be tricky. Look for explicit phrases like "breakfast included" or "rate with breakfast". Be wary
of vague terms like "breakfast available," which often just means the hotel has a restaurant where you can purchase it. Many booking sites have filters to narrow your search to only show properties that include meals. Use these tools to your advantage. It’s also wise to compare the room-only rate with the breakfast-included rate. Sometimes, the price difference is minimal, offering great value. Other times, you might be better off financially by finding a local café.
Scrutinise the Fine Print
Once you've selected a hotel, it's time to become a detective. Before confirming your payment, carefully read the booking details and the fine print. This section contains crucial information about your stay, including what’s included in your rate. Look for a section titled "Inclusions," "Rate Details," or "Amenities." This should clearly state if breakfast is part of your package for the entire duration of your stay. Some promotional offers might only include breakfast for the first night or have other specific conditions attached. Ignoring these details is a common pitfall that can lead to unwanted charges and a frustrating start to your vacation. Taking a few extra minutes to read everything thoroughly can save you from future headaches.
Get Written Confirmation
Don't stop at the confirmation email. To be absolutely certain, take the proactive step of contacting the hotel directly. A quick phone call or, even better, an email to the hotel's reservation desk can provide definitive proof. An email is particularly useful as it creates a written record you can show at check-in if any disputes arise. In your message, simply state your booking confirmation number and ask for verification that breakfast is included for all registered guests for every night of your stay. This simple action eliminates any ambiguity that might exist between the booking platform's information and the hotel's own system. It is not uncommon for discrepancies to occur, especially when booking through third-party websites.
Confirm Again at Check-In
Your diligence shouldn't end when you arrive at the hotel. During the check-in process, it’s a good practice to verbally confirm the inclusions of your stay with the front desk staff. Ask directly, "Just to confirm, our booking includes breakfast for both of us each morning, is that correct?" This final check ensures everyone is on the same page and gives the hotel a chance to correct any misunderstandings in their system. If they state that breakfast is not included, you can immediately present your booking confirmation email or the written confirmation you received earlier. Addressing the issue at the beginning of your stay is much easier than trying to resolve a billing dispute at checkout when you are in a hurry to leave.
Know Your Rights as a Consumer
In India, if a service that was advertised and included in your booking confirmation is not provided, you have recourse. Misleading claims and false advertising are considered unfair trade practices under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. India's consumer protection authority has been taking steps to hold both hotels and online aggregators accountable for such discrepancies. If the hotel refuses to honour the booking terms, calmly present your evidence. If they still charge you, make sure to get a detailed bill showing the breakfast charge. Keep all your documentation, including screenshots of the booking, confirmation emails, and any correspondence with the hotel. You can file a complaint on the National Consumer Helpline or other relevant portals. While it may seem like a hassle for a small amount, it holds businesses accountable for their promises.
