The Undisputed Champion: Dangal
Topping the list is Nitesh Tiwari's biographical sports drama, 'Dangal' (2016). With a staggering worldwide collection of around ₹2,000 crore, it remains the highest-grossing Indian film ever. While Aamir Khan's portrayal of Mahavir Singh Phogat was central,
the film's true magic lay in its universal theme of female empowerment and a father's determination. The masterstroke, however, was its unprecedented success in China, where it grossed more than double its Indian earnings. 'Dangal' proved that a powerful, emotionally resonant story could transcend language and cultural barriers, creating a new and incredibly lucrative overseas market for Indian cinema.
The Game Changer: Baahubali 2: The Conclusion
Before 'Dangal's' China run, it was S.S. Rajamouli’s epic that redefined the scale of Indian blockbusters. 'Baahubali 2' (2017) shattered records, grossing over ₹1,800 crore globally. Its success was built on the tantalizing cliffhanger of its predecessor, “Why did Kattappa kill Baahubali?”. But it delivered far more than just an answer. The film offered a visual spectacle and grand mythological storytelling never before seen on such a scale in Indian cinema. It became the first Indian film to cross the ₹1,000 crore mark, establishing the “pan-India” film model and proving that regional cinema could dominate the national conversation.
The Rise of Pan-India Spectacles: RRR and KGF 2
The path forged by 'Baahubali' was taken to new heights in 2022. S.S. Rajamouli returned with 'RRR', a fictionalized tale of two real-life freedom fighters, which earned over ₹1,250 crore. Its high-octane action, patriotic fervour, and the Oscar-winning song 'Naatu Naatu' created a global phenomenon. In the same year, the Kannada film 'KGF: Chapter 2' exploded onto the national scene, collecting around ₹1,250 crore. Its success was driven by a larger-than-life hero, gritty action, and a swagger that resonated with audiences across the country. Together, these films cemented the power of South Indian cinema to produce mass-market hits that appeal to a nationwide audience, often by dubbing and marketing them as major Hindi releases.
The King's Comeback: Jawan and Pathaan
The year 2023 belonged to Shah Rukh Khan, who reasserted his dominance with two mammoth hits. First came 'Pathaan', a slick spy thriller that grossed over ₹1,050 crore and revived the Hindi film industry after a lean period. It was a classic star vehicle, banking on high-octane action and SRK's undeniable charisma. He followed it up with 'Jawan', which surpassed 'Pathaan' with collections of over ₹1,150 crore. Directed by Atlee, 'Jawan' blended a mass-market South Indian filmmaking style with SRK's star power, featuring a socially relevant message. These films proved that the appeal of a true superstar, packaged in a high-concept, event-style movie, remains an unbeatable formula.
The Heartfelt Blockbuster: Bajrangi Bhaijaan
Not every mega-hit relies solely on spectacle. Salman Khan's 2015 film 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' earned over ₹900 crore worldwide, a testament to the power of a strong, emotional story. The film saw the superstar in a departure from his typical action roles, playing a simple man on a heartfelt mission to reunite a lost Pakistani girl with her family. Its cross-border theme of peace and humanity, combined with a moving performance from child artist Harshaali Malhotra and a strong supporting cast, resonated deeply with family audiences in India and overseas. It demonstrated that even for the biggest action stars, a compelling narrative with a powerful emotional core can deliver record-breaking results.
