The primary draw for any diver is what they can see, and Havelock delivers spectacularly. The island is blessed with crystal-clear waters, where visibility can range from 15 to an astonishing 40 metres during the peak season from October to May. This
exceptional clarity, far from industrial pollution, illuminates vibrant coral gardens and the bustling marine life within them. The sea conditions are generally calm with gentle currents, especially at beginner-friendly sites, making it an ideal and safe environment for those taking their very first breath underwater. Water temperatures remain a comfortable 26-29°C year-round, allowing for long, relaxed dives without the need for thick wetsuits.
For the First-Timers: Nemo Reef
Havelock excels at welcoming newcomers to the world of diving. The most famous beginner site is Nemo Reef, a shallow shore dive just off Govind Nagar beach. Its pool-like conditions, minimal currents, and easy beach entry make it the perfect training ground for non-swimmers and first-timers. The reef is aptly named for its abundant clownfish populations living in sea anemones. Divers can explore a rich natural coral garden and even an artificial reef formed by a deliberately sunk jeep, all within a short swim from the shore. This accessibility has made it the go-to spot for introductory dives and PADI or SSI certification courses.
For the Certified: A Playground of Diversity
Once certified, divers unlock a treasure trove of over 20 world-class sites, each with a unique personality. There’s a remarkable variety, from gentle reef slopes to dramatic underwater walls and pinnacles. The Wall, one of Havelock's first discovered dive sites, is a submerged rock face that drops into the deep channel, attracting large schools of fish and offering a thrilling experience for advanced divers. Lighthouse is another versatile site, suitable for all levels and one of the few places in the Andamans where night diving is officially permitted, revealing a completely different cast of nocturnal marine characters. Other popular sites like Aquarium and Turtle Beach are beloved for their calm conditions and reliable sightings of sea turtles and diverse reef fish.
The Thrill of the Deep: Advanced Sanctuaries
For experienced divers seeking a true adrenaline rush, Havelock is home to a 'holy trinity' of advanced sites: Johnny's Gorge, Dixon's Pinnacle, and Jackson's Bar. These offshore locations are swept by stronger currents and are magnets for pelagic species. Johnny's Gorge is renowned as the most reliable spot in the Andamans for shark sightings, particularly whitetip reef sharks. Dixon's Pinnacle consists of three towering rock formations rising from the seabed, covered in vibrant soft corals and swarmed by barracudas, giant trevallies, and Napoleon wrasse. These sites offer a glimpse into the wilder side of the Andaman Sea, where encounters with manta rays and even the occasional whale shark are possible.
