For decades, aerobic exercise—often called “cardio”—has been the undisputed champion of heart health, and for good reason. Activities like running, swimming, cycling, and brisk walking make your heart pump harder and faster, strengthening the muscle itself.
This process helps lower your resting heart rate, improve circulation, and manage blood pressure. The American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. Studies consistently show that this level of activity is a cornerstone of preventing cardiovascular disease. However, focusing solely on cardio might mean you're missing out on another crucial component of long-term heart wellness.
Strength Training's Heart Connection
While cardio directly trains the heart muscle, strength or resistance training supports the cardiovascular system in a different, yet equally important, way. Lifting weights, using resistance bands, or bodyweight exercises builds lean muscle mass. More muscle boosts your metabolism, meaning you burn more calories even at rest. This helps manage body weight and reduce harmful visceral fat, a known risk factor for heart disease. Furthermore, strength training has been shown to improve the body's sensitivity to insulin, lower “bad” LDL cholesterol, increase “good” HDL cholesterol, and reduce chronic inflammation. A 2023 article in the journal Circulation even noted that resistance training is linked to a 17 percent lower risk of heart disease compared to no training at all.
A Powerful Partnership
The real magic happens when you combine cardio and strength training. They don't just coexist; they enhance each other's benefits. A landmark 2024 study published in the European Heart Journal found that a combination of aerobic and resistance exercise reduced cardiovascular disease risk factors just as much as an aerobic-only regimen. The combination group, however, also gained the unique benefits of improved muscle strength. Think of it this way: strength training builds a more efficient body. With stronger muscles, everyday tasks and even your cardio workouts become less strenuous, putting less overall strain on your heart. Building muscle improves your body composition, which in turn helps regulate blood pressure and blood sugar—two critical factors for cardiovascular health. The study's authors concluded that resistance exercise should be seen as an addition to aerobic exercise, not a substitute for it.
Structuring Your Weekly Workouts
Creating a balanced routine doesn't have to be complicated. The American Heart Association recommends adding at least two days of moderate- to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activity to your weekly schedule, alongside your 150 minutes of cardio. You don't need to spend hours in the gym; some research suggests that just 30 to 60 minutes of strength training per week can provide the maximum risk reduction benefit. You can schedule your workouts in a way that works for you. Some people prefer to do strength training on separate days from their cardio to allow for full recovery. Others might combine them, performing a shorter cardio session followed by resistance exercises on the same day. The key is to target all major muscle groups and to listen to your body, allowing at least two days of rest between strength sessions for the same muscle groups.
