India's higher education system produces a vast number of graduates, but their employability remains a significant concern. Reports consistently highlight a troubling gap. According to the India Skills Report 2026, overall employability has risen to 56.35%,
which means that nearly 44% of graduates are still not considered adequately prepared for the jobs they seek. Employers find that while graduates may have theoretical knowledge, they often lack the practical and soft skills necessary for the modern workplace. This 'readiness gap' isn't just about technical know-how; it extends to critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and adaptability—skills that are essential in a rapidly evolving economy. Studies show that many employers are forced to administer their own skill assessments because a degree alone is no longer a reliable indicator of capability. This disconnect results in prolonged training periods for companies and frustrating underemployment for bright, young graduates.
What Is Structured Feedback?
Structured feedback is a formal, continuous, and collaborative process of communication between industry, universities, and students designed to align educational outcomes with workforce needs. It moves beyond informal guest lectures or occasional internships. Instead, it involves creating systematic channels for employers to provide regular input on curriculum design, course content, and the specific competencies they require from new hires. This could manifest as industry leaders co-designing course modules, companies providing anonymised feedback on the performance of recent graduate hires back to their universities, or students receiving direct critiques from industry mentors on their projects. The goal is to create a dynamic loop where education is not a static, one-time delivery but a system that constantly adapts to real-world demands. This makes learning more relevant and ensures graduates are equipped with skills that have immediate value in the job market.
From Theory to Practice
Implementing a structured feedback loop requires a deliberate shift in how academia and industry interact. For universities, this means moving beyond a purely academic focus to embrace work-integrated education models. This could involve mandatory, credited internships with formal review processes, or project-based learning where students tackle real-world business problems provided by partner companies. Some institutions are already showing the way. For example, Indira University's partnership with Philips integrates project management specialisation directly into the engineering and MBA curriculum, giving students exposure to global industry standards before they graduate. For companies, participation must be seen as a strategic investment in their future talent pipeline, not a CSR activity. Initiatives like the 'Professor of Practice' scheme, promoted by the University Grants Commission (UGC), allow industry veterans to teach and help shape curricula, embedding practical wisdom into academic programs.
Challenges on the Path Forward
While the solution sounds promising, scaling it across India's vast and diverse higher education system presents significant hurdles. A major challenge is the sheer size and fragmentation of the system, with thousands of institutions varying wildly in quality and resources. There is also a cultural gap to bridge; academic institutions often prioritise theoretical research and operate on different timelines than market-driven industries that demand immediate, practical solutions. For this to work, both sides need to invest time and resources, which are often scarce. Professors are frequently overburdened, and companies may be hesitant to commit personnel and a curriculum that changes constantly. Overcoming these barriers will require strong coordination, potentially facilitated by government bodies like AICTE or industry associations like NASSCOM, to create standardised frameworks for collaboration that benefit all stakeholders.
