Dubai, a city synonymous with audacious architectural feats, is adding another dazzling project to its portfolio: a walkway made of 24-carat gold. The plan promises a unique tourist experience, but its development status remains a point of interest.
A Glimmering Path in Old Dubai
The
much-discussed 'Gold Walkway' is a new attraction planned for the Dubai Gold District in Deira. According to official announcements, this will be the world's first and longest walkway made using 24-carat gold. The project was formally announced in late October 2026, with officials stating it would provide a unique experience for tourists and residents, allowing them to literally walk along a golden path. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance Dubai's reputation as a global hub for gold trading and a premier tourist destination. The walkway is set to be a highlight of the Dubai Gold District, a purpose-built destination launched in January 2026 to consolidate the city's gold and jewellery trade, from retail and wholesale to bullion and investment.
From Vision to Reality
The announcement of the gold walkway was made by Rashid Al Harmoodi, the Senior Director of the Commercial Sector at the Dubai Gold District. He stated that the project is expected to be open to the public before the end of 2026, possibly within two months of the late October announcement. However, specific details regarding the walkway's exact length, the construction methods, or the total amount of gold to be used have not yet been publicly released. The announcement was strategically made alongside another golden milestone for the city: the unveiling of a pair of record-breaking gold earrings that secured two Guinness World Records.
Part of a Grand Revitalization
The Gold Walkway is a key feature within the larger Deira Enrichment Project, a massive urban regeneration scheme by developer Ithra Dubai. This ambitious project aims to modernize and revitalize Dubai's historic trading hub while preserving its cultural heritage. The Gold Souk Extension, which officially had its grand opening in April 2022, is the centerpiece of this effort. It adds over 1 million square feet of new development, including 295 retail shops, hundreds of residences, and modern office spaces. The design focuses on improving the visitor experience with air-conditioned, shaded walkways, ample parking, and better connectivity to public transport—addressing many of the challenges of the original, more congested souk.
Blending Modernity with Tradition
The goal of the Deira Enrichment Project and the Gold Souk Extension is not to replace the old, but to enhance it. The new extension provides a more urban and comfortable shopping experience while maintaining the charm and character of the original Gold Souk. The area now boasts thousands of new parking spaces, a significant upgrade that makes the historic district more accessible. The new 'Gold Walkway' attraction will be the latest element designed to draw visitors, combining the area's legacy of trade with the city's flair for creating unforgettable landmarks. It represents a fusion of commerce and tourism, aiming to attract not only gold traders and shoppers but also sightseers from around the globe.
