A New Blueprint for Indian Travel
For decades, railway stations were simply functional transit points. Today, under initiatives like the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, they are being reimagined as world-class travel hubs. The goal is to create integrated spaces that are not only efficient
but also comfortable and welcoming. Stations like Rani Kamalapati in Bhopal and Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal in Bengaluru are early showcases of this vision, boasting airport-like infrastructure and a host of modern facilities. This redevelopment focuses on creating 'City Centres' within the stations, providing spaces for both travelers and the general public with amenities like food courts, lounges, and designated areas for local products.
Ending the Last-Minute Platform Panic
One of the most stressful parts of train travel has always been the uncertainty of last-minute platform changes. Modernised stations tackle this head-on with state-of-the-art passenger information systems. Large, clear digital display boards provide real-time updates on train arrivals, departures, and platform numbers. This is complemented by free public Wi-Fi, allowing passengers to track train status on their smartphones and stay connected. The introduction of a new-generation Passenger Information System is set to increase ticketing capacity significantly, reducing queues and wait times. Many stations are also implementing access control protocols and dedicated holding areas to manage crowds, ensuring passengers with confirmed tickets can proceed to platforms smoothly while others wait in comfortable, well-equipped zones.
Comfort and Convenience on the Concourse
The travel experience now begins long before you board the train. Upgraded stations feature spacious, air-conditioned waiting lounges, a far cry from the crowded, non-AC halls of the past. These areas are designed for comfort, with better seating, clean and modern toilets, and dedicated baby-care rooms for travelling mothers. For refreshment, passengers have access to organised food courts and cafeterias offering a variety of options. Some stations, like Gandhinagar Capital, are even integrated with hotels, providing unparalleled convenience for transit passengers. This focus on amenities transforms waiting time from a tedious chore into a relaxed, comfortable part of the journey.
Inclusive Design for Every Passenger
A key focus of the station redevelopment is making travel accessible for everyone. Aligned with the 'Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan' (Accessible India Campaign), new stations incorporate numerous features for 'Divyangjan' (persons with disabilities). This includes ramps for barrier-free movement, lifts and escalators to navigate different levels, and dedicated parking spaces. Lifts are often equipped with Braille-coded keys, and tactile pathways are laid on platforms and concourses to guide visually impaired passengers. Furthermore, stations feature accessible toilets and low-height drinking water booths, ensuring that travellers with reduced mobility can navigate the station with dignity and independence.
Enhanced Safety and a Sense of Security
Feeling safe is fundamental to a positive travel experience. Modernised terminals are equipped with comprehensive CCTV surveillance systems to monitor station premises 24/7. Improved lighting in all areas, including parking lots and circulating areas, enhances visibility and security. Dedicated initiatives like 'Meri Saheli' are also being deployed, where female Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel interact with women passengers, especially those travelling alone, to ensure their safety throughout the journey. These measures create a secure environment, allowing passengers to relax and focus on their trip without worrying about their safety or their belongings.
